I learned a lot teaching SAT prep for Ivy West in Los Angeles and K-12 subjects in Orlando’s Lake Highland Preparatory School tutoring center. As your private academic coach, I work with you to address weaknesses and capitalize on strengths through diagnostic testing, reviewing schoolwork and/or analyzing existing test scores.

Sometimes reading aloud is a crucial training step. Surviving the oral exams for the International Baccalaureate diploma was definitely harder than much of my coursework at Yale. My scholastic journey gives me the power to share the intelligence of how to successfully study and demonstrate mastery of material.

Over the years, I’ve found that the best results come from concentrated, twice weekly training sessions about 6 to 8 weeks before the test date. We make a plan to cover any verbal, mathematical, reasoning or analytical skills
that you can build to pursue success.

I ask students to show their work on actual tests and have proctored timed test sections to explore the issues of how to take time-saving notes, prioritize calculative strategies and visualize solutions to problems. I have carefully reviewed students’ arithmetic, essays and vocabulary-building compositions. I bring out the red pen and mark errors. You can definitely email me for samples of the red pen in action.

Piano

Classically trained in piano from the age of seven and educated in music theory at Rollins College, John Contos won Richter and Sudler fellowships at Yale University for his short films, which he also musically scored. In addition to building a piano repertoire of works by Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Grieg, Satie and Stravinsky, Contos pursues intense scholarship of composition and orchestration from works by Bach, Holst, Rimsky-Korsakov and Schoenberg. He encourages piano students to write short original pieces while stressing the vital importance of mastering sight reading, scales and traditional exercises such as those by Czerny and Hanon.
