Hi! I'm Miss Katie. I have been a natural teacher all my life, from giving my younger sister "homework" when we'd play school as kids. Moving forward, I frequently watched neighbors' and friends' kids. From K-12 I was in the Gifted program, along with Gifted English. I graduated from UCF with my Bachelor's in English - Creative Writing with a minor in Technical Writing. I became a nanny, first of two boys, and was responsible for tutoring the nine-year-old, helping him improve a letter grade in English. The three-year-old and I did counting, imagination playing, letter blocks, and many others. Next, I was a Pre-K teacher in a private school and obtained my DCF hours, CPR certification, and CDA.
Teaching has been the most rewarding experience I have had. I truly enjoy when I've gotten through to a student. I often see things differently, so I feel I offer alternative ways to present material. Some children thrive with the pre-structured lessons; some need a different way to view it to make things click. During Pre-K and after, homeschooling and helping lead virtual lessons during Covid-19, I used several creative methods, such as Hangman, homemade card decks for sight words and math problem games -- even a full homemade UNO deck, among others. I constantly come up with new ideas for my kids, and that's when I feel my best -- when they feel their best.
My experience with kids ranges from three months up to 13 years, and I have spent most of my time tutoring kids in elementary school -- first through fifth. I have learned there's no "one size fits all" method to teaching. I consider myself very friendly and have a sense of humor I know when to use and when to pocket. I have a great sense of balance keeping kids on track, being firm when needed, but also gentle and encouraging. If I can witness that lightbulb and sense of accomplishment during a session, that's all I need. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions, or if you think I'd be able to enhance your child's learning!
