I help middle school students discover that math is simpler than they may think. I have over six years of one-on-one math tutoring experience with students in elementary school through college. I help middle school students discover that math is simpler than they may think. I have over six years of one-on-one math tutoring experience with students in elementary school through college. I have tutored several subjects including Algebra 1 and 2, SAT Math, and Calculus 1. I started tutoring as a high school junior and have worked with more than 25 students. I passed the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE) for Mathematics 6–12 and scored 770 out of 800 on the SAT Math section, placing me in the 99th percentile for SAT Math. I graduated high school summa cum laude and am currently working on my Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Psychology at the University of Central Florida.
My approach is simple: I want students to understand the math well enough to explain it themselves. I start with what the student already knows, then I create connections with the new material, always adapting my explanations to meet the student’s needs. When a student tells me they don’t understand something, I don’t immediately give them the answer. Often, they understand more than they realize but lack the confidence. I will rephrase the question, give them time to think, and guide them with questions until they reach the answer on their own. Using this approach, I have seen students improve by up to two letter grades and go from being insecure in basic division to confidently solving for x.
I help middle schoolers because I understand what it feels like to lose confidence academically in middle school. I moved from Brazil to the United States when I was in seventh grade, and the language and cultural transition affected my confidence in school dramatically. I eventually recognized patterns in my classes, and developed strategies to help me succeed academically. From eighth grade to my second year of college, I earned A’s in every single class, including AP courses in high school. If your middle schooler has more potential than their grades currently show, I would love the opportunity to help them discover it.
