I attended UNF from 2008-2012, where I earned my bachelor's degree in secondary mathematics education. I am specially trained and FL certified to teach math for grades 6 through 12.
When I graduated, I taught at Ft. Caroline Middle School in Duval County, FL. I taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Geometry to 8th graders. During that school year, I used direct instruction, and the "I do, we do, you do" approach. It was very effective. I had 86% of the Algebra students pass the state end-of-course exam, and 91% of the Geometry students pass the state end-of-course exam.
The following year, I started teaching at Fleming Island High School in Clay County, FL. I taught there for 8 years. I taught Algebra 1 to 9th graders most of my time there, in addition to Algebra 2, Math for College Readiness, Liberal Arts Math, and Advanced Topics. I have covered a wide variety. Even there, my primary methods have been direct instruction, working out examples for students and showing them what do, what common errors to be aware of, what strategies to remember. Once I gave students the starting point, I assigned practice problems, and circulated the room, looking for students who needed help.
Then in 2022, I started teaching at Ridgeview High School in Clay County, FL. I have taught Geometry every year, with the addition of AICE Math 1 AS this school year, which is like Precalculus, and an introduction into Calculus, covering very basic derivatives and integrals. I continue to use direct instruction, giving students the opportunity to practice and ask questions.
During my time at Fleming Island, I had the opportunity to tutor a student one-on-one in Algebra 2. He was able to ask questions, work on practice problems, and get real-time feedback so that his errors could be fixed quickly.
