About Lawrence

Hi, my name is Larry and I am a retired veterinarian. I practiced veterinary medicine for 40 years and have enhanced my education with continued updates in math and most sciences. I have two grown children, attend Church of Hope, and enjoy working with young people.
As regards any specific teaching philosophy, I recognize that people learn in different ways and I try to adapt my approach to that path. Substituting and tutoring at Sylvan has exposed me to these different scenarios. I have patience and truly enjoy seeing students 'see the light'.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I took advanced math as early as high school and entered college as a math major.I have continued to stay current with recent college classes. My association with The Sylvan Center has led to increased exposure to math and the various ways that students become familiar and comfortable with this subject.

Algebra 2

I took advanced math as early as high school and entered college as a math major. I have continued to stay current with recent college classes. My association with The Sylvan Center has led to increased exposure to math and the various ways that students become familiar and comfortable with this subject.

Anatomy

In college, as I started my pre-veterinary studies, the biological sciences assumed the dominant roll. Practicing veterinary medicine for 40 years, I was constantly immersed in these subjects. I have enhanced my current knowledge with post graduate classes in all of these.

ASVAB

The ASVAB tests basically on a wealth of general information. After practicing veterinary medicine for 40 years and going back for refresher classes in math and all the sciences I feel that I have accumulated that level of information. Plus tutoring at The Sylvan Center for 16 months has given me real satisfaction in watching young people learn.

Biology

In college,as I started my pre-veterinary studies, the biological sciences assumed the dominant roll. Practicing veterinary medicine for 40 years, I was constantly immersed in these subjects. I have enhanced my current knowledge with post graduate classes in all of these.

Chemistry

Early in my education, both high school and college, I had no love for chemistry. I believe strongly that that was due to poor teaching. Having since had the opportunity to attend two upper level chem classes, I find it interesting and challenging. My own interest and current familiarity, added to a desire to teach make me a strong tutoring candidate.

Elementary Math

Math is like a second language to me as it has been an intimate part of my life from very early on. Tutoring at The Sylvan Center for a year and ahalf and in the private sector as well have shown that students learn in different ways and at vastly different rates. I have develpoed a great deal of patience and enjoy watching children grasp new and seemingly difficult material.

GED

The GED exam tests a persons exposure to and understanding of a variety of subjects. Having had a directed college education(medicine) and the opportunity to enhance that experience with post graduate classes, I feel comfortable in most areas. Teaching at The Sylvan Center has shown me that students learn in different ways and at different rates. Helping someone with the drive to complete his/her education would be a pleasure.

Geometry

I took advanced math as early as high school and entered college as a math major. I have stayed current with recent college classes. My association with The Sylvan Center has led to an increased exposure to math and the various ways that students become familiar and comfortable with this subject.

GRE

After practicing veterinary medicine for 40 years that previous college experience plus the recent 30 hour class work has brought me current in many areas. I am presently tutoring at The Sylvan Center and this has exposed me to many types of student and their various learning techniques. I enjoy seeing students reach goals and seeing things through.

Microbiology

In college,as my I started my pre-veterinary studies, the biological sciences assumed the dominant roll. Practicing veterinary medicine for 40 years, I was constantly immersed in these subjects. I have enhanced my current knowledge with post graduate classes and I retain a particular fondness for microbiology.

Nursing

Having practiced veterinary medicine for 40 years and recently refreshing my anatomy and physiology, at the college level, I feel confident with this material. Medicine remains my passion and seeing someone 'pick up the gauntlet' is very gratifying.

Physiology

In college,as I started my pre-veterinary studies, the biological sciences assumed the dominant roll. Practicing veterinary medicine for 40 years, I was constantly immersed in these subjects. I have enhanced my current knowledge with post graduate classes in all of these.

Prealgebra

I took advanced math as early as high school and entered college as math major. I have continued to stay current with recent college classes. My association with The Sylvan Center has led to increased exposure to math and the various ways that students become familiar and comfortable with this subject.

Reading

Through 300 plus college hours and extensive personal reading I have been able to become comfortable with what I feel to be the key to liking to read, vocabulary. Teaching at The Sylvan Center has shown that students doing either SAT or ACT routinely have issues with vocabulary. Learning to like to read, in my opinion, is the route to effective learning.

SAT Math

I took advanced math as early as high school and entered college as a math major. I have continued to stay current with recent college classes. My association with The Sylvan Center has led to much SAT math with the various ways and strategies that help students become familiar and comfortable with this subject.

Study Skills

After completing about 350 hours of college, raising 2 children of my own, and tutoring at a learning center for a year and a half, a reasonable set of study skills is a natural. These experiences have taught me patience and that not all children learn in the same manner. I enjoy the interaction with young people and look forward to those encounters where learning is the main focus.

TEAS

TEAS evaluates a person's general academic skill levels as they pertain to a prospective nursing career. I have practiced veterinary medicine for over 40 years and have recently refreshed my math, chemistry, and life sciences with post graduate classes. I have previously tutored privately in all of these areas and currently tutor at The Sylvan Center. One-on-one is my preferred method of bringing the excitement I still feel for medicine.
