Approved subjects are in **bold**.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

In college, as I started my pre-veterinary studies, the biological sciences assumed the dominant roll. Practicing veterinary medicine for 40 years, I was constantly immersed in these subjects. I have enhanced my current knowledge with post graduate classes in all of these.

The ASVAB tests basically on a wealth of general information. After practicing veterinary medicine for 40 years and going back for refresher classes in math and all the sciences I feel that I have accumulated that level of information. Plus tutoring at The Sylvan Center for 16 months has given me real satisfaction in watching young people learn.

Early in my education, both high school and college, I had no love for chemistry. I believe strongly that that was due to poor teaching. Having since had the opportunity to attend two upper level chem classes, I find it interesting and challenging. My own interest and current familiarity, added to a desire to teach make me a strong tutoring candidate.

Math is like a second language to me as it has been an intimate part of my life from very early on. Tutoring at The Sylvan Center for a year and ahalf and in the private sector as well have shown that students learn in different ways and at vastly different rates. I have develpoed a great deal of patience and enjoy watching children grasp new and seemingly difficult material.

Through 300 plus college hours and extensive personal reading I have been able to become comfortable with what I feel to be the key to liking to read, vocabulary. Teaching at The Sylvan Center has shown that students doing either SAT or ACT routinely have issues with vocabulary. Learning to like to read, in my opinion, is the route to effective learning.

After completing about 350 hours of college, raising 2 children of my own, and tutoring at a learning center for a year and a half, a reasonable set of study skills is a natural. These experiences have taught me patience and that not all children learn in the same manner. I enjoy the interaction with young people and look forward to those encounters where learning is the main focus.
