Hi, I'm Layni! I'm a STEM tutor who specializes in comprehensive K-12 math and science revision. I am pursuing an Associate in Arts degree with long-term plans to complete a Bachelor of Science in Astrophysics. I've completed rigorous coursework in college algebra, general biology, anatomy, and human development, and am actively preparing for Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. I have direct experience with the AP course and exam style as a tutor and former AP student. I know firsthand how challenging the classes are, and I love helping students work to overcome them!

I have extensive experience across private and classroom learning environments. My professional history is in private, one-on-one online tutoring, with 570+ documented instructional hours since March 2026. I tutor grades K-8 in biology, chemistry, Earth/space science, physical science, and math. For grades 9-12, I specialize in AP Biology and Anatomy, successfully preparing students for their 2026 and upcoming 2027 exams. I spent several months prior as a local independent tutor, creating lesson plans and study guides that broke down complex material into bite-sized pieces.

I also gained four years of foundational experience with young learners as a high schooler through structured extracurricular programs. I developed biology lessons per school curriculum and presented to local elementary classes in 2nd-3rd grade, and provided targeted one-on-one support to 6th graders in their math work up to algebra 1. I work with diverse age groups and subjects, allowing me to adjust my approach and pace to fit the unique learning needs of every student.

In our lessons, we'll emphasize why major concepts happen instead of only memorizing what happens, and use proven strategies like spaced repetition, visual aids, active recall, and instructional modeling to grasp the subject matter. By practicing problems directly during sessions, your child will develop the long-term comprehension and confidence to keep mastering the content entirely on their own!

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

My background in college algebra and a math-heavy course load for my major, alongside my years of experience in tutoring and academic support in STEM subjects, provides me with the foundation to support your child in their algebra 1 class. I have over a year of direct experience in helping sixth graders with work up to the prealgebra and algebra 1 level. Many of the other subjects I other tutor for, especially AP-level science courses, also incorporate algebraic concepts; passing the AP Biology exam, for example, requires the ability to read graphs, understand exponential growth, and apply given formulas to solve for course-specific things such as water potential or allele frequency. We will use instructional modeling and guided practice to work students through problems they might be struggling with, and show them why we take each step rather than following rote memorization. That close approach, and allowing the student to regularly work through problems on their own, allows us to pinpoint exactly where students are making mistakes, and bridge gaps from their current or previous classes to increase their understanding and confidence over time. The one thing that will increase math skills more than anything else is regular and frequent practice, and we'll make sure to incorporate that into every lesson, so no given concept is easily forgotten again!
Anatomy

Anatomy

I have a strong passion for anatomy/physiology and health science; I have taken college-level coursework in biology, anatomy and human development, and am actively training for a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare. This provides me a strong understanding of the major human body systems, vitals, and core concepts up to the 12th-grade level. My 570+ hours in science tutoring also provide comprehension of general human physiology, allowing me to connect anatomical structures to broader functions (how the specific tissue composition of an artery determines the function of the whole artery, for example, and the role kidneys play in osmoregulation). I can provide context for students so they fully understand not just what they're learning in class, but why it matters. We will focus on breaking down complex physiological systems into manageable concepts instead of rote memorization, and apply those concepts to the bigger picture; a core concept in physiology coursework is understanding how each system works together to regulate a living person.
Biology

Biology

I offer comprehensive preparation for students tackling any level of biology, from elementary to high school, with a particular focus on the AP and AICE curricula. Of my 570+ hours of professional tutoring history prior to joining Wyzant, the vast majority were dedicated to AP Biology in particular, so I am deeply familiar with the course content as outlined by the CED, and the exact topics students often need the most help with. I successfully prepared numerous students through the 2026 and upcoming 2027 AP Biology exams, and have supported them in achieving up to 100% on their tests in class. I can help with review and exam prep, course prep before the school year begins so students are prepared and ready to go on day 1, and revision for students who are currently in class! I also have years of prior experience in teaching elementary school students foundational life science concepts through lesson plans I developed by hand. Biology is a deeply familiar subject to me, and I can help you or your child break the content down into grade-appropriate explanations that will improve their comprehension and confidence in the subject overall!
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

In addition to completing college algebra, AP Statistics, and precalculus, I have over 570 professional tutoring hours and four years of extracurricular experience helping students master K-8 mathematics. I regularly walk students through core concepts like measurements and unit conversions, creating and reading graphs, rational numbers, and algebra. I've worked with young children alone for nearly five years, and I understand why students may fall behind in math or develop math anxiety if even one topic is missed. Math then may turn into a subject many people dread because it feels like a pointless struggle, especially without any real-world context, but it doesn't have to be that way. I will find the gaps in their understanding and help fill them in while also giving younger learners a reason to appreciate what they're doing in math class and why it matters! We will emphasize active learning, instructional modeling and spaced repetition techniques to ensure that your child gets all the hands-on practice they need to excel in their math class and build their confidence back!
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

I am currently working towards my associate's degree, and will be pursuing a B.S. in Astrophysics once I graduate. I have nearly five years of total teaching experience in elementary sciences, including over 570 working hours where I helped many students in grades 1-5 develop and reinforce their understanding of life, Earth and physical sciences. I have an extensive history of creating lesson plans for local elementary schools on life science concepts, covering topics like ecosystems and adaptations, and presenting them to classes primarily in 2nd-3rd grade. I know how to work with young learners and meet them where they're at. I incorporate student interests into their learning and break down harder subjects in a grade-appropriate way so younger students will stay engaged, and develop their core problem-solving skills and the confidence to thrive in any science classroom!
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have completed enough coursework in algebra, up to the college level, to confidently tutor middle and high school students in prealgebra. As an incoming physics major, I am pursuing a very math-heavy degree, and much of my four years of tutoring experience before I started professionally working was in helping grade 6 students prepare for their algebra classes! I understand exactly why students tend to struggle so frequently with math: they miss the way one topic was explained, or aren't there for one lesson, and everything else stops making sense because math builds on itself. We will work to find exactly what your child is missing in their class so they can not only succeed and build confidence in prealgebra, but also so they are prepared going into algebra 1! Prealgebra lessons will be very hands-on; we will walk them step by step through the problems they're working on in their classes, and practice answering them together while also emphasizing the importance of what we're doing. Math is much, much easier to comprehend once we understand WHY we're doing it in the first place. We will put it into context and help your child grasp the topics enough to improve their understanding, complete their assignments themselves, and feel secure in their work!
Psychology

Psychology

I've excelled in college-level coursework in both psychology and human development, scoring a 5 myself on the AP Psychology exam. I deeply understand the material, and would be more than happy to help with course and exam preparation for the AP Psychology class specifically. There is a high amount of overlap between the biological concepts in the course and the material I teach daily from AP Biology. Using the experience from my 570+ hours in science tutoring, I can reliably support your child through exam prep, a preemptive approach to prepare for AP Psych before their summer break is over so you all know exactly what to expect, or targeted review of class content while the student is taking the course!
