Hi!

I passed all my tests needed to be certified in the State of Florida in order to teach Elementary Education. I was certified by the State of Florida to teach Elementary Education K-6 up until 2016. My expired Professional Educator's Certificate states that I, Deborah J., has satisfactorily completed all requirements of Florida Statutes and State Board of Education Rules for Elementary Education Grades K-6 which includes fingerprinting which is checked by the FBI and FDLE. Most recently I earned my Masters in Education. I taught a 6th grade language arts class in 2015. Last year, 2017, I taught 6th grade math in Pasco County under my Eligibility for Certification using my Masters in Curriculum and Development as well as Mathematics up to 14 years. I am also still subbing in Pasco County: Most recently in Odessa Elementary and Seven Springs Elementary. I like to stay current in what the students are learning in school. I love research-especially using the new Eureka Math!

If you need help with reading or writing, I can assist you. I have been a substitute teacher for ten years, tutor for 6 years, and a teacher for two years. Pasco County has embraced Engage NY Eureka Math this school year. I have been teaching/tutoring Eureka Math for two years in all elementary grades.

My business experience includes 30 years of owning my own business with my husband. We had a florist shop in New York for sixteen years - that is now owned and run by my brother - and then video stores here in Florida for 14 years. I have been tutoring for six years. I am well-versed in business!

I think it would be a good idea to meet in a public place such as Starbucks or if it is more convenient, I could meet you in your home. Thank you for considering me.

Needlework

I have been knitting since I was 10. I am now 56. I am a patient teacher. I am currently teaching as a substitute teacher in the local school system. I have made many scarves, hats, ponchos, and blankets. I am a simpler knitter with some crocheting skills that I would be happy to share with you. I like to embellish my knitting with a little crocheting. I can show you how easy it is to do. I like to experiment with different colors and textures of yarn and needles of various sizes. I can give you some great ideas that I have tried and maybe we can come up with some new ideas together. I often luck out and get great yarn after holidays for a fraction of its original cost. I have other great ideas on how to procure yarn that I will share with you.

Business

Business,

Business

I have been in business with my husband for 30 years. We owned and operated a florist in New York and a video store in Florida. I am well versed in customer service, employee training, and many other aspects of running a business. In my florist I bought, cleaned, and designed flowers. I trained my employees to be floral designers, talk to customers, sell wedding flowers and all occasions. In my video store I trained employees how to talk to customers, work the register and computer, and procedures that were necessary to run the business successfully. I also have an online presence on eBay, Amazon, and Half.com for nine years. I would be able to help you list items, organize and price your treasures. I recently received my BAS in Management at St. Petersburg College. For my Senior Capstone Project I had to submit and present a business plan. I got a 90! If you need to create a business plan, I can assist you with that. As a college student I have honed my skills on the computer. I am proficient in Word and PowerPoint for Microsoft Office 2007. If you need to create a PowerPoint, I can help you. a Thank you for considering me. Sincerely, Miss Debbie
Public Speaking,

Public Speaking

I have been taking public speaking courses since I was in high school. My most recent event where it was necessary for me to use my public speaking skills was in April of 2011. I was presenting my business plan to an audience and community business owners in order to win in the Business Plan Competition at St. Petersburg College. I had to sell the judges on my business plan for my hot dog "RV" truck. After I successfully presented my plan, I had to answer rigorous questions posed by the panel of judges. I succeeded in answering all their questions to their satisfaction. I won second place. That is just one example of my success in public speaking. I have been a business owner who has had to sell myself to customers in my florist, in my video store, and now as a teacher. Standing before a class and teaching a lesson while orchestrating the discipline variable has made me even a better public speaker. If you have a speech due, I can help you with your presentation.

General Computer,

General Computer

I have had many years of experience using various computer software and operating systems. I owned a video store for 14 years that required knowledge of our software application. I have managed three online businesses with Amazon and eBay since 1999. I have taken over 30 credits of computer courses at PHCC earning an Information Technology Administration certification. I earned my teacher certification to teach Elementary Education in the state of Florida. More recently, I have helped adults use their computers; including cleaning up files and making their computer run smoother. I have also taught a beginners' computer course in the New Port Richey library. There I taught a few adults how to work the computer, the mouse, and their email. I have developed a computer course that helps beginners to practice and master their computer skills.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

My strengths lie in listening to students and their concerns. I will develop a rapport with your children first by making a connection with them from my own elementary school years. Then I watch for their strengths and compliment them. While I work with your children on their weaker subjects, I make sure to compliment them on their progress. I will encourage your children to get involved in their own learning process. Your children will walk away feeling good about their accomplishments. They will welcome the chance to return to me so they can continue to learn and progress in their studies. I am currently teaching as a substitute teacher in a local school system. I have taught in several elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. I am currently in a teacher certification program at PHCC. I earned my BAS in December of 2010. Even though my degree and life experience are in management, I have been able to use my highly developed skills in training to help me teach and reach students. I welcome all challenges. A good example of a success story: Last year I repeatedly took the toughest third grade class in a local elementary school. The teacher was pregnant and absent a lot. At first, I felt as if I was there to direct traffic and discipline certain issues. After each class, I noticed that we were getting more work done. The students understood the course material and wanted to learn more. Getting to know the students and their strengths was a big plus in managing this class. This year they see me and welcome me in their new classrooms. Many of them have become a big help in working with the rest of their new class. I look forward to meeting you and your child.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Elementary school math presentation has changed over the years. Most recently we are using counters and diagrams to work out the math problems. Students are responsible for adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing fractions and whole numbers. They need to understand basic algebraic math concepts in order to complete their assignments. Geometry is another topic that students are now responsible for. They need to recognize, measure, and draw shapes. Students must understand all the math basics before they can move on to the next step on the ladder. I can help your child to learn the necessary concepts that they will need to perform proficiently in middle school. I will use counters, shapes, fraction tiles, number line, and pictures to unlock the mystery that is sometimes called math.
Reading,

Reading

Reading is the most important skill your child can have. Once they know how to read, they can decode other subjects including math. I will help your child discover their reading essentials. In the beginning we work with blends, vowel sounds, and then we figure out what the word is by using clues. I look forward to working with you and your child in their reading adventures.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I will show the student how to take notes, apply concepts, keep track of paperwork, and to check their progress. Setting about 15 minutes a day aside for studying is a great idea. After each studying session, a small assessment should be made to see if the student understands the new concepts that will now be theirs- their responsibility. Once a student understands the concepts of studying, they will learn to enjoy their lessons and look forward to doing it.

Writing,

Writing

Writing is like weaving and sewing several paragraphs together to create a story that may or may not be true. A story always begins with an introduction. The thesis or "what is the story about" sentence(s) of your introduction will be answered throughout the paper. The middle of your paper will have examples of the points you are trying to cover all connecting to the thesis sentence in the introduction. Perhaps the most important part of writing is creating an ending or a conclusion that will answer the thesis sentence(s). I am an elementary school teacher who understands the importance of writing a cohesive, well-explained paper. I will brainstorm with your child to find an idea that inspires them. Once inspired, we begin with the process of finding a thesis sentence(s) for your child's paper. We will create a "grabber"; a way to get their attention. We will explore writing styles and options that will help your child to connect to the process of writing their paper. After outlining or "planning" the paper with some quick thoughts or ideas we came up with, we will begin fleshing out the details with examples that support the thesis sentence(s) and create a "juicy" middle. Often we will review the introduction to make sure we are covering all the points needed to have a well-written and balanced paper. In the conclusion of the paper we will answer the thesis sentence(s)again and more clearly. Throughout the whole process of writing we will be finding worthy shortcuts, discovering word alternatives or adjectives, and answering the questions that we will be supported with evidence and examples. We will also keep the writing assignment to 60 minutes or what the FCAT allows. Another important tool that we will be working on is peer review. Your child will learn how to critique and become a better writer.

Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Pre-algebra is the study of natural numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, and negative numbers. Skills will be built working on factorization of natural numbers ( a review of fifth grade math). In pre-algebra properties of operations such as associative and distributive are reviewed from elementary math and expanded on using middle-school math equations. It also includes the study of simple roots and powers in math equations. The rules of evaluation of expressions, operations along with parentheses are constantly reviewed and developed by applying math skills. The use of variables will be studied in depth. The use of geometry is brought in lightly with the applications of area and volume. Using graphs may be included if the student's current school is reviewing the points and other related skill sets. I will break down the steps to make the process of learning and practicing easier to remember and to apply. I will bring math sheets with the appropriate lessons on them to be worked out by the student and myself. I will also review the students' book and homework so that we may all be on the same page; so to speak.

CLAST,

CLAST

When I took my CLAST tests in 2007, I was very nervous. Even though my grades were high enough to exempt me from taking the CLAST, I was told that it was necessary to take and pass it if I wanted to be a teacher. It has been several years and many tests later that I now feel qualified to tutor someone who is studying for their CLAST. I have passed my General Knowledge test and my Professional test in order to become a teacher in Florida. I also passed my test that was required to teach Elementary Education. Anytime that I want to add a subject to my teaching certificate, I must study and take another test. I know how to study. I can teach you how to study and be prepared to take your CLAST test.

Tremendous help.

Miss Debbie has helped my daughter who's in the 5th grade tremendously this school year. She used to hate math and had great difficulty but now tells me that she is actually beginning to enjoy it. Thanks Miss Debbie for all your help. You are greatly appreciated.

Patient and kind.

Deborah has been working with my kids, 3rd grader and 1st grade for a couple of weeks now. I find that she is a very pleasant person, patient and the kids are responding to her well. Deborah has been energetic, positive, and has taken the initiative to bring worksheets to prepare for the FCAT. I appreciate her help in giving my children the boost and confidence in their school work. Deborah has been a pleasure to have work with my kids. I have seen noticable difference in both of their progress. Our goal was to mostly prepare my daughter for the math portion of the FCAT while getting my son up to speed on his reading and writing. We will have a final lesson this week and the fcat is around the corner. I feel with the help that Deborah has provided, we have given our son the tools to do well on the FCAT.
