Bio

My name is Alex; I'm a recent graduate from F.I.U. with a bachelors in Chemistry working on a second degree in Computer Science. I've been tutoring students for over ten years and during that time I've had the chance to help a variety of students in a multitude of subjects. I've tutored students who are genuinely struggling with classes, students who are focused in collegiate athletic programs and just need to achieve a minimum SAT, and I even have experience tutoring students with learning...

My name is Alex; I'm a recent graduate from F.I.U. with a bachelors in Chemistry working on a second degree in Computer Science. I've been tutoring students for over ten years and during that time I've had the chance to help a variety of students in a multitude of subjects. I've tutored students who are genuinely struggling with classes, students who are focused in collegiate athletic programs and just need to achieve a minimum SAT, and I even have experience tutoring students with learning disabilities. I generally like to keep my tutoring sessions fun and engaging because it tends to diminish the aversion some students have toward studying. Furthermore students are more likely to study the material when I am not present and this greatly increases the efficacy of the tutoring.

I've tutored a variety of students through the years in a diverse range of subjects. However for the most part I've tutored students mainly in math (from elementary all the way to Algebra) English (reading, English composition, essay writing, etc.) and Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics). Ultimately this is a job that I find very rewarding.

When I tutor new students one of the first things I like to do, even before I gauge their proficiency with the source material, is to see if they know how to study properly. Being able to study efficiently and effectively is vital to becoming knowledgeable in any subject. Essentially I can only have hands on time with a student for only a hand full of hours each week, what makes tutoring successful is having students know how to study and review material when they do not have a teacher or tutor nearby. Other than that I like to encourage students to arrive at answers in whatever method they find comfortable and not be restricted by the mechanical approach to solve problems often taught in classrooms.

While in undergrad I have taken multiple classes that have helped me understand the human body and its processes. I have taken Intermediate Human Physiology, Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Biochemistry I and II, Biology I and II, and not to mention the labs that come with all of these courses that have provided me with extensive knowledge on the subject.

Though I was a chemistry major in college, I have a great background in Biology. I've taken both Biology I and II, along with Biochemistry I and II, Human Physiology, and Human Anatomy. I also have experience tutoring other high school students in AP biology and IB biology.

I am a computer science major at FIU focusing in software engineering and the majority of my programming experience has been with Java. Furthermore I've taken programming I and II as Java being the primary language of choice.

I have been playing the piano since I was 10 years old, and for the first 8 years I was taught the rudiments of playing the piano and music theory by a piano instructor before essentially teaching myself and practicing for pleasure. I have a systematic approach to teaching beginners and the slightly more experienced students how to play the piano. I also have numerous awards from small piano recitals for my accomplishments in music theory and piano playing.
