I love writing and tutoring! I am a part-time tutor, an attorney, a non-profit professional, and a parent--and I write all the time. Teaching and helping people to learn are among my passions. I have had a lifelong commitment to education and to language especially.

My experiences in tutoring include a particular emphasis on mentoring the general college-level writing and the drafting of legal memoranda and briefs. My students have been both native English speakers and speakers of English as a second language. My approach is unique, bringing helpful analytical tools from other disciplines and many years of writing experience.

I have very strong English language skills, with a BA and graduate studies in English. I am an accomplished writer and a voracious reader. I can write, ghostwrite, proofread, or edit any text.

My philosophy regarding tutoring is to always be supportive and patient. Lessons should truly be a learning process for the student. The progress and pacing of the sessions are directly linked to the student's ability to grasp the material. With children, I also involve the parents as much as possible to ensure that the skills and learning are reinforced.

The measure of my success is the student's increasing comfort level with whatever he or she finds most challenging as well as a paper of which they can be proud. Ideally, he or she will become more interested in and intellectually curious about his/her coursework as well. Achievement naturally flows from increased confidence!

Let's work together to achieve the results you want and to reach the goals you have set for yourself.

Grammar

Grammar

I am a veteran writer, proofreader, and editor with a keen ear and a genuine enthusiasm for language. I love teaching students about the intricacy and beauty of the English language. Well-spoken and well-written English are important and achievable skills. I enjoy the increasing comfort level and mastery exhibited by the student through the tutoring process.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I earned a B.A. in English with high honors and then a J.D. As a third-year law student, I taught legal writing and appellate advocacy. As an adult, I enrolled in graduate school, working toward an M.A. in English, completing all the coursework short of my thesis. I have continued to write professionally on a daily basis. For many years, I have also been a writing mentor and coach. Assisting students with essays, research papers, college applications, and personal statements have all been particularly rewarding experiences.
Writing

Writing

I have been an avid writer and reader since childhood. My love of words led me to major in English at the University of Florida. During my college years, I enjoyed writing essays, term papers, and short stories. As a young lawyer, I mastered legal memoranda and appellate briefs. As my career evolved, I have had the chance to write press releases, op-eds, and legislation. Writing is a very important part of everything I do and I delight in the opportunity to help someone become a better writer.

Great tutor with a great teaching method!

Joan and I met many times before my LSAT test date, and in a few weeks, a relatively short amount of time, she was able to adequately prepare me with various methods for solving all types of problems. I found her approach to be very helpful, patient, and most importantly effective. She was always on time and prepared with supplementary materials to aid in a deeper understanding of the LSAT's contents. Having just completed the exam, I'm absolutely positive that I would not feel as confident as I do now had it not been for my sessions with Joan. I highly recommend contacting her if you're looking to take the LSAT!

Extremely Helpful

Joan was very helpful with my personal statement. She gave me plenty of ideas on what to add, what schools will be looking for, and how to structure the statement.

Amazing tutor!

Ms. Joan was very patient with me and explained not only her way of doing things but also ways that might work better for me depending on how I figure out problems. She came fully prepared with materials and not only gave me the knowledge to get the problems done, but the confidence to believe in what I was doing. By far the best tutor.
