My name is Shareen. I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Studio Art and a minor in Film. In four years, I have worked as a substitute teacher for a private Montessori school, an art teacher for a charter Montessori school, and a reading interventionist and writing teacher at a public elementary school. In addition, I have worked for about two years as a private English language, reading, and writing tutor. In total, I've spent around six years teaching children as young as 7 and as old as 14, as well as teaching English as a second language to an adult learner.
In the public school system, I worked with 25 students per fifth grade class to prepare them for the Florida Standards Assessment Writing Exam. I created lesson plans and worksheets and sat one-on-one with them to see if they understood their scores and what they could do to improve them. For my reading interventionist duties, I worked with first to fourth grade in small groups of 4 to 7 students. These students needed help reaching the appropriate reading level for their grade. For this, I followed a curriculum of reading and teaching new vocabulary words.
In my private tutoring for reading and writing, I help students one-on-one. I tailor the lesson based on their strengths and weaknesses. For example, if the student struggles with vocabulary, we will work on flashcards for memorization, and I will have the students create sentences with the vocabulary words so they improve in their practical application as well.
When I teach English to adults, I also work one-on-one. I may have the student read an article to check their pronunciation and comprehension. Afterwards, we will have a conversation about the topic. At the end, we will go over a lesson I have created based on the student's needs. For example, I may focus on new vocabulary words, grammar rules or pronunciation.
