In an ideal world, an application would be judged on merit—top students would attend top schools. In reality, many top students go to average schools, where their top talent doesn't fully blossom.
Rather than ideally, applications are judged "holistically." Even more than high test scores, admissions officers want to get to know you as a human being, one who will fill a specific need in their community.
