Hi there! My name is Tommy, and I graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelor of Arts in English, a second major in Interdisciplinary Studies, and a minor in History. After my undergraduate journey, I received a Master of Arts in Linguistics from Florida Atlantic University. There, I worked for two years as a Spanish instructor and, in total, I have spent eight years working as a tutor across a wide range of subjects. I have spent my life learning, and I would like to share my knowledge with you!

I believe that encouragement goes a long way, as well as being challenged. I understand that some subjects are more challenging than others, and that it is indeed possible to break them down. I like to use examples for every subject I tutor, especially for abstract and complex subjects. The frustration of not understanding a topic is only temporary until it starts becoming clear! Humor is important to me as well—it makes the whole process of learning a new subject much more exciting. The most rewarding aspect of working with students to me is witnessing your curiosity. I love to receive questions and ask them myself in return.

I have worked with students that have ADHD, dyslexia, and autism.

During my free time, I enjoy reading novels and writing poetry. I also enjoy playing tennis and pickleball, but the relentless Floridian heat makes this a bit difficult sometimes.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

When I was an undergraduate studying English, I took several literature classes that deepened my appreciation for fiction and creativity. These courses ranged from science fiction and horror to Victorian literature. In many of them, I was asked to create original stories and even short films—and I had an incredible time developing them! Since then, I’ve written several short stories, a first draft of a mythology-inspired novel, and over 40 poems. I know how challenging creative writing can be—brainstorming, developing ideas, and pushing past writer’s block isn’t easy. But thankfully, inspiration is everywhere. Let me help you find yours and make your writing shine.
Linguistics

Linguistics

I have three years of experience tutoring students in syntax, phonetics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, second language acquisition, and endangered languages. I really enjoy making my sessions as engaging as possible, and every session is specific to my student's needs. For phonetics, the use of IPA charts with transcription practice is usually the way to go, and for second language acquisition, knowledge and reinforcement of certain case studies are essential. There are about 7,000 known languages worldwide, which complicates the field of linguistics a little bit but also makes it all the more fascinating!
