My undergraduate degree is in English with a creative writing concentration and secondary education. I have an MFA in creative writing with a fiction concentration and an MA in English specializing in 19th-century American, British, and African-American women's literature. I am Florida certified to teach 6-12. I have been teaching for over 30 years at the undergraduate, high school, and middle school levels. I was the founder and director of the St. Thomas University Writing Center and editor of the literary journal Prospectus. I have been trained and taught workshopping, basic, and honors courses in person and blended online. My students' ages have ranged from 12-65.
In addition, I have published four collections of poetry, numerous short stories, and various types of nonfiction. I have been twice nominated for a Pushcart and once for a Best-of-the-Net Award. My books and poems have received other awards and recognition. My blog, Writing with Celia (now defunct) contains a wealth of instructional advice.
I am well-versed in a variety of areas, such as creative writing (fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction), literature (world, British, American, African-American), composition (including basic), and scientific literature. I am an expert researcher and can teach MLA, APA, and Chicago styles of documentation. I am particularly interested in college or other application essays, research and documentation, and creative writing (all genres).
My particular approach to tutoring is to gauge the student's abilities and needs, and then provide the bridge between them. In the past two years, I have been teaching students how to use AI in productive, honest ways. I am also fluent enough in Spanish to communicate effectively with ESL students, but I am not an expert in ESL nor fluent enough to tutor in Spanish.
