I have two degrees in education, including a master’s degree in Reading and Learning Disabilities from the University of Miami. I was a classroom teacher for 10 years, including one year as an elementary school reading coach and three years teaching first, second, and third grade. I now work as an educational consultant and private tutor.

There are many strategies an educator uses to increase reading and writing proficiency. More than anything, exposing students to high-quality books is a must! On reading level books develop fluency and more challenging books help to build knowledge and interest.

Vocabulary and reading comprehension must be taught explicitly, along with phonics for early readers. Reading and writing instruction are opposite sides of the same coin, so it’s critical to analyze well-written books when learning how to write well.

I also work to empower students so that they not only perform better in their current academic environment, but also develop the tools and mindset needed to continue learning throughout their lives. This sense of empowerment fosters curiosity and adaptability, allowing them to succeed in many different areas.
