Hello, my name is Laura and I am enthusiastic about helping students reach their full potential in school. I graduated from Juniata College in December of 2019 with my B.S. in biology. Upon graduating I worked in a radio-carbon dating lab for a year and a half before pursuing a career in education in October of 2021.
I obtained my temporary teaching certificate, and worked as a high school teacher for Miami-Dade County Public Schools for three years (2021-2024). I worked with 15-16 year old students. My classrooms had general ed. students, Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students, and English as a Second Language (ESL) students. I taught a total of six separate groups each year, which totaled anywhere between 150 and 210 students per school year.
My approach in the classroom consisted of the gradual release method. I begin by working through a problem as an example to the students, followed by working on a similar problem using their help along the way, and ending with asking them to work through a third problem on their own and reviewing their approach and answer together. I intend to use this method when tutoring while keeping in mind that every student has a distinct learning style and being flexible with my approach.
I believe my educational background and experience in the classroom will aid me to be the best tutor I can be to a struggling student or any student looking to get ahead.
