With over 20 years of combined teaching and tutoring experience, I have helped many students achieve academic goals. I have a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Creative Writing. The MFA is a three-year degree, which qualifies me to teach at universities. For example, I have taught Basic and Advanced Composition at Nova Southeastern University (NSU), Broward College, and at Miami Dade College. I have also taught Introduction to Poetry at The Florida Center for the Literary Arts. I help students master the PSAT, SAT, ACT, ISEE, and SSAT. I help students identify main ideas and annotate passages. I also teach students to divide vocabulary prefixes, roots, and suffixes. These foundational skills are used for future exams, quizzes, and self-study. My students have entered schools like Cornell University and Parsons School of Design. They have also earned entry to various private middle schools and private high schools.
I have helped neurodivergent students who have been diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and autism. I treat each student as an individual and tailor each session according to their specific needs. As a College Prep Tutor for Toby Rose's College Prep, I critiqued and scored SAT and ACT essays. I earned CRLA Level 2 Tutor Certification as an Academic Services Writing Tutor at NSU, where I reviewed APA and MLA formats for essays, prepared ESL and native English speakers for the GKT for teacher certification and for the CLAST. In addition, I visited classrooms of first-semester nursing students and taught thesis formation and overall essay coherence and content.
Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis once said, "There is no great writing, only great rewriting." This motto is one I embrace and often impart to ambitious students in the throes of composing and revising essays of all types. Helping students voice their stories is an integral part of my profession and vocation, as is empowering students to become independent thinkers.
