I am a state-certified teacher who spent 2009-2019 overseas (United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom). In the UK, I taught the AS and A-Level English Language curriculum for seven years and was promoted to Curriculum Leader of the 13th ranked English program in the country. Our department's consistently impressive results led to us being named national runners-up for the Sixth Form Colleges Social Mobility Award in 2019. Additionally, I am an accredited teacher mentor who trained first-year teachers for the University of Leicester and an experienced examiner who marked national English Language exams for the Welsh Joint Education Council. Upon my return to the United States, I accepted a position teaching AS and A-Level (Cambridge) English Language at a selective satellite program.
On top of my experience, I hold B.A. degrees in English Language and Arabic, as well as an M.A. in Arabic and Linguistics. Given that Cambridge English is essentially an introduction to linguistics, my education provides the subject expertise for this particular course.
My questioning style challenges students to unpack a text or spoken discourse independently. The resources I have created myself and stolen from my talented colleagues have been honed and perfected over the years so that my students are flat-out dangerous in that exam hall. I don't watch a clock. I don't tell students the answers. I do guide students through a skills-based approach, the benefits of which transcend the narrow focus of grades and assessment.
