Bio

As a dedicated learner, with a 4.0 GPA in both high school and college, I have the background and desire to teach, and I have been awarded many honors in scholastics: high school valedictorian and summa cum laude graduate from the university. I am a MENSA member and National Merit Scholar. I also have 30 years in the computer industry during which I was a certified corporate trainer and courseware author for eight years. In 2011, I began tutoring for four agencies for two years and then substitute teaching for over two years. (While in high school, my teachers asked me to tutor their children in English and math.)

If I can help a student set aside his fears long enough for that first glimpse of understanding to cross his face, I know I've helped him experience the thrill of learning, and his confidence has bloomed, making comprehension come more quickly thereafter.

My SAT scores, without any preparation (I had to cheer at a football game the night before), opened my entrance into Mensa. and I had honors in math, writing, English, science, music, and French as the high school valedictorian. I was in an accelerated program in all subjects. I enjoyed several math classes in college, my favorites. I'm also an excellent tutor in English, grammar, writing, and literature and well aware of how vital is it to be able to write effectively.

Please contact me with any questions whatsoever; I look forward to facilitating your growing knowledge and better grades in school. I especially stress the basics in every subject, and it sometimes helps to take a couple steps backward to establish a strong foundation on which to build.

I do offer makeup classes if you cancel less than 24 hours before the class.

Algebra 1

My SAT score in math was 742, back when the test was much more difficult than it is now. Since scholastics came easily to me, I feel I'm able to simplify math rules for students, as I did for both my daughters all the way through school and college.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a substitute teacher in the elementary grades for over two years. Also, I have privately tutored elementary students in reading, comprehension, writing, vocabulary, and spelling, plus math of all elementary grades. I have also worked with elementary students with Back to Basics Learning Dynamics, Inc. for over two years.
English

English

I tutored K through college for over two years with Back to Basics Learning Dynamics in English grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, paragraph structuring, parts of speech, sentences, research papers, writing in general, and literature and comprehension. I also received an award in English, among several others, when I graduated as valedictorian. I am a former MENSA member and National Merit Scholar, who could not have achieved a 4.0 GPA in both high school and college without an exhaustive command of the English language and all its rules.
Reading

Reading

I have an aptitude for being able to explain math in its simplest terms, and I'm very encouraging when it comes to promoting comprehension, both of which are vital as your child progresses in school.

Awesome teacher/tutor👏🏾

After the first session my daughter’s first comment was, “I wish I’d had her for a math teacher last year, I’d be so much further along.” Leah is so patient and clear in her teachings. Highly, highly, recommend!!

Knowledgeable but unprofessional in how service was handled.

Leah B. is a knowledgeable tutor; however, she was unprofessional and how she handled a disagreement we had with her services. She stated her cancellation fee and policy was clear in her profile in that if you did not show up for tutoring, you would be responsible to pay for the amount of time that she waited for you to log on. We were not aware of this as it was not clearly communicated. We had a couple of sessions scheduled that though were confirmed, we had other things come up that caused us to lose track of time and we did not show. Leah waited for 30 mins without notifying or calling us as a reminder of the sessions after they started. Though staying on top of the schedule was on us, working full time can impact that especially when you are only getting email notifications you don't always check right away. It was not clear to us that we would still have to pay for these sessions even though our child did not attend. If we knew that, we would have reassessed working with her as a tutor as we are looking for someone more professional in how they communicate and reach out to further confirm the sessions if need be. We asked her about this and we felt that it was not right to still be charged even though services hadn't been rendered and we were not clear on her cancellation policy. If we were, there wouldn't be an issue. She responded with her still charging us and proceeded to belittle us in her response. This is our first time using this service and will most likely be our last based on our experience with her.

Tutor responded:

Each week, out of 4, I had to email to see if she wanted a lesson, but I skipped Christmas vacation. She would respond affirmatively a couple days before the class, and she would get a confirmation when I then scheduled the class. The first 2 sessions, I sent a reminder but had to call to get the son to logon. For the 1st class, it took him 20 minutes to get ready. For the 2nd class, she said she didn't know there was one. For the last 2 lessons, even after email confirmations of the class and email reminders at the time of the class, no one showed. The first no-show was a freebie, and she was quite indignant when she was assessed a $35 fee for the last one. I don't belittle people, and I didn't belittle her. I didn't expect her to pay, as I told her to find a tutor that could meet her expectations. All she had to do was let me know.
