As a lifelong learner, I, too, continually take on the role of a learner. I know only too well how one is humbled during the experience of learning. Yet, it is only by going through this period of discomfort that one can know the thrill of pushing oneself to a higher level. This is best described through the words of Thomas Payne, "...the more difficult the conflict, the more glorious the triumph." Helping learners be successful is a source of personal pride and accomplishment that makes tutoring so rewarding for me.
In 2011, while living in Illinois, I had to take the NCLEX-RN test to reactivate my nursing license. This was no easy task given I had been out of nursing school for 36 years. I diligently used a proprietary preparation program (Kaplan) and was able to pass the exam in the minimum number of 75 questions. In 2016 a test preparation company (Trivium Test Partners) hired me to both prepare and review 800 NCLEX-style questions. These questions are now part of four published test publications that prepare graduate nurses to pass the NCLEX-RN. In addition, my five years in outcome measurement research provides me a solid foundation to understand how test questions are best prepared.
