About Sheena

I love helping students learn. As a classroom teacher for twelve years in middle and high school, my most rewarding moments were when I could see those light bulbs start lighting up in their brains as my students started to understand the concepts of the subject. It was my goal to present the information in the most interesting and relevant way so that it really made sense to them and when they got, it was there for good. Although my calling is not in the classroom at this time, I still really enjoy tutoring and helping students learn. Working with students is what drew me into the field of teaching in the first place and I've learned that real teaching is often not in the classroom.

I specialize in tutoring middle school science, which includes Earth science and life science. I also specialize in biology for high school and college students. As a senior in college, I served as an English tutor for grammar and writing. I also critiqued graduate students' essays and theses as well while in college and am now working with teaching students English as a second language along with teaching other English skills. Within the last few months, I assisted in editing a book which will be available for purchase this September. My goal for each session is to help the student achieve his or her goals in that particular subject that might provide a challenge.

I have currently tutored students ranging from K5-12th grade in English skills ranging from vocabulary terms, writing skills, and grammar. I have also tutored high school students in biology by helping them to prepare for final exams which included covering concepts not grasped in the classroom. Due to my past experience with teaching AP biology, I am also qualified to work with college students taking biology.

My tutoring sessions are based on the students' needs. I like to know in advance what the student is needing assistance with so I know how to prepare. If something comes up that is not discussed prior to our session, I like to make sure the students' needs are covered. I assign homework as needed to ensure that students are understanding the material. I also like to inform parents of their students' progress by sending progress reports.

I believe in completing everything with excellence, so if the student and the parent are not pleased with the results of a tutoring session, I will not require a payment for that session.

I am flexible with time, but I do ask for a 24 hour cancellation notice due to my schedule.

To ensure that students have a comfortable place to work, I generally like to work in a college library or a public library, however I am willing to travel to accommodate the student.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you reach your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I began working with an autistic student in 2015. He was homeschooled and in the 6th grade. I helped him with science and language arts, which included reading, writing, grammar, etc. He worked well with me, and will continue to work with me during his 7th grade year. His parents were pleased with his progress, and I saw improvement as the year progressed.

Biology

I graduated with a Bachelor's of science degree in biology from Oral Roberts University. I taught biology as well as AP biology for 12 years which included developing curriculum for our science department. I have tutored various students in biology and saw great improvement in their overall progress during their course of study.

English

During my high school and college career, I performed well in English and received accolades for my success. Due to my success in high school, I was given the opportunity to become an English tutor during my senior year of college. I tutored undergraduate as well as graduate students. They experienced major improvements in their grades while working with me. I have recently had the privilege of working with elementary, middle school, and high school students concerning their English skills and have seen great progress.

ESL/ESOL

I taught many ESL/ESOL students during my teaching career. They were able to understand my methods of teaching and was successful in my class. The English became manageable for them to handle while in my classes.

Grammar

During my high school and college career, I performed well in English grammar and writing. Due to my success in high school, I was given the opportunity to tutor college students during my college career as well as graduate students. I have recently had the privilege of working with elementary, middle school, and high school students in grammar and have seen great progress in their understanding of how to use grammar properly.

Homeschool

During my 12 years teaching in the classroom, I taught my younger brother science during his time of being homeschooled. I worked with him in middle school and high school until he went to public school as a sophomore. He was successful in science in public school due to our working together. In 2015, I began tutoring an autistic student who was also being homeschooled. I tutored him in science and language arts. At the time he was in 6th grade, and he will be entering 7th grade this school year. His parents were pleased with his progress, so I will be working with him again this coming school year.

Study Skills

As a middle/high school teacher for 12 years, I had numerous students who struggled with grasping science concepts. With different tools used in my classroom including teaching outlining and note taking skills, I saw major improvements in their work. My method of teaching material and breaking down information helps students to excel.

Vocabulary

I have recently worked on vocabulary with elementary and middle school students and have seen great progress.
