Judy was a professional, knowledgeable and friendly tutor! My daughter really liked her and I felt confident that she knew the subject areas we were focusing on. I would highly recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught learning disabled children for 30 years. Most of my students were dyslexic. My private school was language based and connected to a local college. Methods used to teach my students included The Benchmark program, Linda Mood Bell phonics and The StoryGrammar Marker.
I have worked with children from k - 9th grade. In both a private and public setting, I focused on specific strategies to meet my students' needs. Several programs included the Benchmark Program and The Story Grammar Marker. The Benchmark Program breaks down words into specific patterns, emphasizing the vowel sound and what comes after it. The Story Grammar Marker is an organizational language tool; through physical markers and work sheets with specific icons, the student is guided through all subjects. This program is the foundation for improving reading, writing and speaking. I worked with the creator of this nation wide program to fine tune aspects of the program and test it within my classrooms. In addition, all subjects taught (reading, writing, math etc.) were integrated with pragmatic instruction. All areas of teaching used positive reinforcement. I have guided my students for 30 years using these tools and many others. My Master's Degree in Psychology and Special Needs qualifies me to guide students from varying backgrounds and strengths.
In teaching reading and language skills, research-based programs were used. Some of these included the Linda Mood Program (focusing on sounds and sound patterns) and The Benchmark Program. The Benchmark Program breaks down words into their smallest sounds and focuses on specific word patterns. The concept of identifying the vowel and what comes after it is the foundation of the learned strategies. The strategies taught are integrated and reinforced throughout the session. Each student is taught utilizing the strategies that best fit his/her needs.
I have taught reading, language skills including phonics, writing and spelling for thirty years. I have two Masters Degrees, one in Psychology, and one in Special Needs. I also have a BS in Elementary education. I have worked in both public schools and private schools. The private school had a language based curriculum and I was senior staff, teaching children and training adults.
I have taught reading for 30 years .Several strategies I have used are The Benchmark strategy, LindaMood Bell, the Story Grammar Marker and Explode the Code. All programs are language based and have been researched and tested within my private school.
As is written in my biography, I have taught special education for thirty years. I frequently worked with children one on one. Strategies in non verbal learning difficulties, phonics, comprehension and organization were the core of my teaching format. Specific strategies include, Lindamood Bell focusing on phonics, reading, comprehension and spelling, The Story Grammar Marker focusing on both comprehension and organization and the Benchmark spelling program.
I have used many organizational and study skills throughout my 30 years of teaching. I have found several strategies most helpful. The Story Grammar Marker uses icon markers and maps to guide the student through all reading material helping the student integrate phonology, semantics, syntax, and the metalinguistics of language. Other strategies used are the Lindamood Bell Language and organizational program as well as The Benchmark Strategy Program. When combined, these methods improve a student's awareness and understanding of academic demands.
I have a masters in special Ed, psychology and regular education. Our private school developed several nationally used writing program. Feel free to research this.
