Hi! My name is Lynn. I graduated from college in 2003 with an elementary education degree and then went on to earn a graduate level certification in ESOL. l taught for four and half years in public schools before coming home to stay with my own four daughters. I have homeschooled them for the last fifteen years. During that time, I have tutored students in writing, reading, and grammar, and provided educational support across the curriculum for fellow homeschool families.

Currently, I teach a small group of middle school writing students online and I tutor high school writing online. I have found teaching and tutoring writing is very rewarding as students learn processes and procedures for communicating well and sometimes surprise themselves with how well they can communicate their thoughts and ideas through the written word!

I also have a passion for teaching reading. I have students with dyslexia and ADHD and I know the struggles those learning challenges can bring, but I also know the reward of having a student's face light up when they finally "get it", and they're able to read and begin to enjoy it. It is one of the great joys of my life to help students engage with reading, and I do that through making instruction explicit and systematic in order to ensure academic success for each student. I believe in the power of engagement, and I do my best to make each lesson enjoyable for students so that they have fun learning and want to keep doing it!

Approved Subjects

English

English

I have taught writing to students for twenty years. I believe that teaching students how to organize their thoughts, create a rough draft, edit, and revise creates learners who know how to communicate well in the written word and are able to write for a variety of purposes and in a variety of contexts.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

In the public schools, I taught English Language Learners in a self-contained classroom, where I was responsible for their entire academic curriculum as well as their language learning. We had a wonderful time as they acquired English and grew academically, and I loved learning about their cultures and families. More recently, I taught English online for students overseas, another lovely experience of watching students grow and learning more about their culture.
Grammar

Grammar

I have taught and tutored in English grammar in every grade level from preK-12. Proper grammar helps students to be successful in both academic and work settings, and knowing and communicating grammar rules to students clearly allows them to be successful both in the classroom and in the world after high school. Students who know grammar well can communicate well, a vital skill in today's society!
Homeschool

Homeschool

I have homeschooled my four daughters for their entire school experience, and my oldest graduates in 2025! I have taught in homeschool co-ops for almost ten years and currently run a homeschool support group for middle and high school girls. I also teach writing to a small group of homeschooled middle schoolers and tutor writing for homeschoolers high schoolers. I believe strongly that parents know what their children need best and I am honored to support families in their homeschooling journeys!
Literature

Literature

Literature is fascinating. Studying the author's purpose in writing and the reader's experience of reading great works opens doors of understanding and knowledge that are otherwise closed. Plus, it is just so much fun to step into another world through the written word! Learning about literature is both enjoyable and purposeful and helping students to see that is a great joy of mine.
