BA History Major | Writing Mentor with 2 years experience

Hello, I'm Charles! I am a junior BA History Major with a lot of enthusiasm for history as well as writing. I have two years' experience with tutoring from my job as a Writing Mentor for Arizona State University's composition courses. Even outside of my college courses, I spend much of my free time researching historical topics. Some of the history topics that I specialize in are European history, world history, religious history, and geography. I also specialize in grammar as I am keenly interested in the workings of the English language and my Writing Mentor job has given me experience with tutoring it.

As a Writing Mentor, my previous experience has been focused on tutoring college students online. The position was essentially a combination of a teacher's assistant and a tutor. I would answer any questions students emailed me, and when the initial drafts for the main project were submitted, I would give the students detailed feedback to aid with revision for the submission of their final draft. I would give this feedback through either an email or a Zoom meeting depending on the student's choice. Furthermore, each week, I would grade the student discussion posts and provide feedback on them.

My tutoring style makes use of both cognitive and motivational scaffolding. Cognitive scaffolding is working with the student to help them develop the skills to find the correct answers themselves. Motivational scaffolding is making sure I keep a positive and encouraging tone.
