About Charlye

Bio

I am a certified math teacher with 12+ years of teaching and tutoring experience in grades 1 – 12. Kids are often rushed through the learning process and asked to do problems in a way that does not match their developmental stage. I strive to meet students at their level, whether it be pictorial, concrete, or abstract thinking. In addition, I work to build student confidence, which is critical to math success!

My math degree combined with my classroom experience is in grades 1 – 8, gives me a strong understanding of where students are coming from and where they need to be by the end of 12th grade.
- I provide individual tutoring sessions for students (30, 45, and 60 min) depending on age and attention span.
- I provide support to HOMESCHOOL families/groups, tailoring my services to each unique situation. I love extending learning through fun projects and real-life scenarios.
- I provide math enrichment and remediation to small groups of 4th through 8th grade students. This option is great for summertime math practice as schedules are easier to manage.
- I always incorporate study and executive function skills into each session (discovery of learning styles, time management, organization, and developing study strategies/goals)
- I implemented and trained new teachers in the SINGAPORE math curriculum and am extremely comfortable with this methodology.
- “Tutoring the parent” - I am happy to collaborate with PARENTS to create a remediation plan for struggling or young math students. I provide advice, accommodation suggestions, and weekly games. This works well for young students who learn best through play!
- I earned my gifted endorsement over a two-year period. During this course work, I learned of the important and unique needs of gifted students.

Algebra 1

My degree is in mathematics and I have a strong understanding of high school math concepts. Many of my former middle school students reach out to me for extra help as they encounter difficult concepts in high school.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught 5th and 6th grade math for 8 years. I also provided enrichment and remediation to small groups of 1st-4th graders each day. After school, I hosted math clubs for students needing extra help. As the schools math specialist, I trained new elementary teachers in our schools math curriculum. I also taught a 5th grade study skills class in which we discovered our learning styles, developed appropriate study strategies, and practiced time management and organization skills. As a tutor, I focus on the whole child, encouraging them to practice good habits with a positive attitude as we learn the math material. I have experience tutoring two brothers (4th and 5th grade), Monday through Thursday afternoons. We mapped out our week, studied for upcoming assessments, worked on projects, and completed homework together. By the end of the year, the boys were planning their own weeks (in a planner), setting long and short term goals, prioritizing assignments and projects, and completing homework efficiently and independently. The growth shown was AMAZING!!
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have 9 years experience of classroom teaching experience with 5th through 7th graders. I love finding new ways to explain and make sense of math with students who are struggling with certain concepts!
Homeschool

Homeschool

I have 9+ years teaching math to 1st - 7th graders. In order to be more available to my family, I am currently not teaching in the classroom. While my children are at school, I have lots of flexibility and time to work with homeschool students OR students who are on extended leave due to illness, travel, etc. I am currently a math teacher for a Pre-Algebra homeschool student. We meet 4 hours each week. She completes homework and assessments at home. Because she plans to return to private school for her 8th grade year, I am creating tests and we are building a portfolio/notebook to be submitted to the school. Her parents requested very formal instruction, much like she would have received in the classroom. With that being said, I am flexible as to HOW material is presented. During my years as a math specialists working with grades 1-3, we often learned through discovery activities, games, and real-life experience. Assessment was informal and varied in style depending on the needs of each student. I believe that it takes a village to raise and teach children. I LOVE collaborating with parents in order to provide the best educational experience and support for the child!
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Pre-algebra is my FAVORITE subject to teach. When a students begins to move from conrete to abstract thinking, the algebra concepts begin to click. The majority of my teaching and tutoring experience is with middle school studnets studying pre-algebra and algebra 1 concepts. I have developed many helpful and effective tools, resources, and strategies over the years!

Kid Math Whisperer

More than anything my daughter needed confidence and positive reinforcement. Charlye figure that out very quickly and in only two sessions my daughter had the confidence to show another child math strategy while in class. We still have a ways to go but this is a great beginning. We’re are very pleased.
