Hello everyone,

My name is Breanna, and I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to be able to work with you all in strengthening your writing abilities. I have an extensive background that has allowed me to develop the tools to teach students how to improve their skills in subjects such as creative writing, essay building, and analyzing literature.

I studied at the University of Florida, where I specialized in analytical writing, working with various topics from philosophy to studies in colonialism. Being consistently given rich texts of concepts that were previously foreign forced me to become incredibly well-equipped in breaking down difficult texts into bite-sized portions. Breaking texts down in this light allows students to more easily identify key details, themes, and text structures. Finding these key ideas of the texts allows them to navigate higher-level texts with more confidence and focus on their analytical abilities, as their comprehension of the text has been met at an earlier stage in the process.

Being that my major was English, I also took creative writing courses, so my writing skills are well-versed in both analytical skills and developing narratives in fictional prose. Advising students in their brainstorming processes is key in creative writing. Engaging in activities such as round robins (where students work together to make up a story, one sentence at a time, while using transitional phrases to create an easy-to-follow plot line) and quick writes allows students to ease into the writing process without having to face the pressure of a blank page.

Currently, I work at a high school with students in college-level courses, and I’m constantly adapting to meet their needs- whether through scaffolding, interventions, or strategies like A.C.E. to sharpen their analytical writing. Our lessons will involve writing strategies, analytical exercises, and plenty of brainstorming sessions tailored to suit your unique writing needs. I look forward to our first meeting!

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

During my Undergraduate career I took several writing classes engaging in analyzing literature and undergoing creative studies. I took an American literature class where we dissected works like Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat", a Franz Kafka seminar where we delved into his works both autobiographical and fictional, and even a poetry workshop where we studied poets like Ada Limon and had to write poetry under strict guidelines. I am well-versed in analyzing literature and have a knack for descriptive language and the creative writing process.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

During my undergraduate career I took advantage of my University's writing center with almost every essay I wrote. This allowed me to strengthen the rhetoric, composition, and voice of my writing. I have written essays ranging in a multitude of topics, anything from Nietzsche to Anthropological studies. I also teach at a public high school, consistently encouraging my kids to strengthen their writing abilities by having them work on several types of writing exercises and reflections to work to understand where their writing needs improvements.
Fiction Writing

Fiction Writing

Throughout my undergraduate studies, I have delved into many fictional narratives ranging from E.T.A. Hoffmann's "The Sandman" and Franz Kafka's "The Trial" to Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat." The intersectionality of the different topics and perspectives of my studies of fictional works has allowed for me to strengthen my skills in both analyzing and teaching rhetoric and composition of fictional works. I work as an English teacher in a public high school where students struggle with larger concepts such as identifying themes in fictional works that seem so out of touch from reality. My English General Paper course's standards show students that an author's narrative can always be connected to real-world thematic issues and concepts.
