Having a Bachelor's of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, I am knowledgeable in the sciences, but I specialize in Mathematics: Elementary, Middle, High School and some College math courses including Developmental Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, and Math for College Readiness.

My favorite subject has always been Mathematics, so I've made myself available over the years to help those who struggle in this area, often turning their dislike of the topic into a confident understanding of that which they had previously feared.

I have always enjoyed working with all ages of children and, as such, have learned how to relate to people at all levels, from children to adults. I've tutored numerous adults in College Algebra, including those who have returned to college later in life.

In addition, I have taught High School Algebra I, 7th grade Math and Kindergarten. After school, I tutored elementary students struggling in the area of Mathematics. I also home-schooled my own child for two years, turning her least favorite subject of Math into a confident favorite subject, simply by going back to the basics.

I have found that most students struggling in Math and Reading, have somewhere along the line not confidently mastered some basic concept. This can have a domino effect, causing frustration in and sometimes complete shutdown of the student. Identifying and honing in on those basic skills, while providing unusually simplified methods for overcoming the common hangups about math concepts, I am able to assure my student's success.

Mathematics simply teaches you how to analyze, sort, and think. With those skills, you are equipped to achieve success in every area of life, and I look forward to becoming a part of your success story!

ACT Math

ACT Math

I have homeschooled my daughter, turning her total dislike of math into extreme confidence in the subject. I’ve even taught Algebra in a small private school and tutored a group of college students in the subject, as well as tutoring numerous other college students who were amazed that they all passed with flying colors! I have tutored math for at least 10 years either in person or online, and I truly love it when the ‘light’ comes on with my students and they become amazed that they can actually do the work without me! At that point I’m simply there for reassurance.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra I is a transitional math subject, whereby the mind must be able to retrain it's thinking to include mathematical concepts so unlike the norm... abstract concepts and ways of thinking "out of the box." Often this is incomprehensible to many students (even adults) and becomes overwhelmingly frustrating to the point that the student gives up or simply fails the course. This is where I shine! For me, there is nothing more rewarding than to witness a student's journey from Algebra I extreme frustration and failure to that of clarified understanding, achievement and undeniable success in the subject! It's especially rewarding being tagged in my adult students' Facebook posts whereby they're bragging of their unbelievable success in Algebra!
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I tend to like the abstract... abstract art, abstract minds, abstract topics, etc. Perhaps abstract can be considered as "thinking out of the box." Algebra II is very much like that. It expounds upon the introduction of the abstract as presented in Algebra I; yet, in part II the mind must be able to retrain it's thinking to include what is extremely not normal... what is abstract! This is where I shine!
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I taught Kindergarten for two years in a small Christian School using Abeka curriculum, as well as having home-schooled my own daughter in the 4th, 6th and 8th grades. In 4th grade we also used the Abeka curriculum, and recently a home-school student I tutored used Paces as his curriculum. While teaching at the small private school, after school I also tutored students of all ages through high school who were struggling with math subjects.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

PreAlgebra is a transitional math subject, whereby the mind must be able to retrain it's thinking to include mathematical concepts so unlike the norm... abstract concepts and ways of thinking "out of the box." Often this is incomprehensible to many students (even adults) and becomes overwhelmingly frustrating to the point that the student gives up or simply fails the course. This is where I shine! For me, there is nothing more rewarding than to witness a student's journey from PreAlgebra frustration and failure to that of clarified understanding, achievement and undeniable success in the subject!
Spelling

Spelling

As an overall general perfectionist, especially academically, it aggravates me when I find misspelled words... especially on business/professional documents! There is nothing more unprofessional. Your spelling is an indicator of your proficiency. I'm a firm believer that if you're going to do something, you should do it right. With my help, weak spellers can conquer this weakness.

Awesome tutor

Sylvia has been great with Deborah. The sessions help clarify questions and build her confidence. She recently took her 9 weeks exam and her grade improved greatly. Thanks for your patience and thoroughly explained lessons.

You are totally welcome! She had it in herself all along; just needed some encouragement to get it out!

Tutor responded:

Thank you for the opportunity to help your kiddo shine! He already had most of it figured out and only needed a little nudging. There's no greater compliment than you telling me he's still speaking of our first tutoring session together! It's truly a joy getting to work with him.

great session !

My son learned and became so confident in just one session ! He is already asking when his next session is !

Engaging!

Sylvia was warm and friendly right off the bat! She helped my son with some 5th grade Math and was helpful in spite technology issues on end. My son is looking forward to the next appointment!

Tutor responded:

Thank you so much for the kind feedback. That first session was technically very trying, but your son was such a trooper and did not show his frustration. I'm glad we figured it all out and have smooth and fun sailing with each session now! He is such a wise young man, and truly just needed a little boost. I look forward to our tutoring session each week!

She is flexible with different learning styles

We are so grateful for Sylvia! My daughter learns more in 45 minutes with Sylvia than she does in a week at school!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Sylvia is not only working with our son on his algebra but also on his organizational skills in school. We have already seen a huge difference in both his organization and his attitude towards school since working with her. His motivation level around school has gone up after just two sessions and he is excited to get organized in all of his classes, which will help him to stop missing assignments.

Great tutor

My daughter is very happy with the way Sylvia is helping her with Algebra 2. She teaches on the same level that a classroom teacher would, but it's so much better since it's a one -on-one experience.
