About Iban

Bio

I have played saxophone since fifth grade and have taught private lessons since 2018 to students from age three through adulthood. I hold a Bachelor of Music in Music Performance from the Los Angeles College of Music (LACM), and I teach saxophone, flute, clarinet, and beginning piano, plus the music theory and ear training that make every instrument easier. Whether you're brand new, preparing for a band audition, or ready to learn to improvise, I'll build a plan around your goals.

At LACM, I studied with Ralph Humphrey, Mitch Forman, Ramsey Castaneda, Bryan Lipps, Jerry Watts Jr., and Tom Luer, and I was a member of the combo that won a DownBeat Student Music Award for Outstanding Performance. I perform mainly on tenor saxophone and double on flute and clarinet. I played saxophone on Morris Day's 2020 holiday single "Cooler Than Santa Claus," have performed with pianist Luke Pinegar and Grammy-winning bassist Steve Gilmore, and was the featured artist for a Gulf Jazz Society concert in Panama City, Florida. I'm also a Syos mouthpiece artist.

My lessons balance strong fundamentals, music reading, and music you actually want to play. Beginners learn healthy breathing, a good sound, and note reading from day one. Intermediate students build technique while preparing band music, honor band auditions, and solo and ensemble pieces. Advanced players work on jazz improvisation, transcription, altissimo, and audition prep. Young children get short, playful lessons, and adults get lessons built around their goals, whether that's community band or jamming with friends.

I teach online and in person, and every student leaves each lesson knowing exactly what to practice. Send me a message with your instrument, experience, and goals, and I'll reply with a plan for your first lesson!

I also serve in the U.S. Air Force Regional Band.

Approved Subjects

Clarinet

Clarinet

I perform on clarinet as a professional woodwind doubler and teach it as part of my woodwind studio, with a special focus on beginning and intermediate band students and adults returning to the instrument. Clarinet has a few unique hurdles, and I specialize in making them feel manageable. Early lessons cover assembly, reed care, a firm and consistent embouchure, and fully covering the tone holes, which prevents many beginner squeaks. Once those basics are solid, we tackle crossing the break into the upper register, voicing, rhythm, and reading, using method books and the music students are learning in band. As students advance, we add scales, articulation styles, alternate fingerings, and solo and ensemble pieces. Because I play both clarinet and saxophone, I'm especially helpful for students who switch between the two, since the differences in embouchure and air trip up many players.
Flute

Flute

Flute is my primary doubling instrument, and I teach it alongside saxophone and clarinet in my private studio. As a working woodwind doubler, I've had to develop a flute sound that holds up in professional settings, and I teach students the same step-by-step process I use myself. Young beginners often start on the headjoint alone to find a focused tone before adding fingerings, which keeps early lessons fun and frustration-free. From there, we build posture, breathing, embouchure flexibility, long tones, harmonics, and note reading, then develop technique through scales and etudes. Intermediate and advanced students work on vibrato, double and triple tonguing, the upper register, and music for band, solo and ensemble, and auditions. I also coach saxophonists and clarinetists who want to add flute as a double, since I made that same transition and know exactly where players get stuck.
Music Theory

Music Theory

I teach music theory the way working musicians use it: as a practical tool that makes reading, playing, and creating music easier. My music performance degree included theory and jazz harmony coursework, and I use that knowledge every time I perform, compose, or teach. Beginners learn note names, rhythm, time signatures, key signatures, and scales, always connected to their own instrument. Intermediate students study intervals, triads, seventh chords, and how chord progressions work, which pays off in band, sight-reading, and songwriting. Advanced students and future music majors explore jazz harmony, including ii-V-I progressions, chord-scale relationships, extensions, and reharmonization, and I can help them prepare for college theory placement exams. Every concept is paired with listening and playing, so theory never feels like a dry worksheet.
Saxophone

Saxophone

I'm a professional saxophonist who has played since fifth grade, earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Performance from the Los Angeles College of Music, and recorded saxophone on Morris Day's holiday single "Cooler Than Santa Claus." Saxophone is the heart of the private studio I've run since 2018 for students of every age and level. Beginners start with embouchure, breath support, posture, reed care, and a clear, centered tone, and we begin reading music right away. Intermediate students work on major and minor scales, articulation, dynamics, and the music they're playing in concert band, jazz band, or solo and ensemble. With advanced players, I teach the jazz language I studied at LACM and use on the bandstand, including transcription, chord-scale relationships, and improvising over standards, along with altissimo, tone color, and repertoire for all-state, college, and professional auditions. I also help students choose reeds, mouthpieces, and ligatures that fit their sound and their budget.
