I'm Andres! I'm a PhD candidate in mathematics specializing in differential geometry and algebraic topology. I first discovered my love of teaching while completing my high school's math and science magnet program and helping friends and classmates with multivariable calculus and differential equations homework. My senior year, I joined the math team and placed in the top 10 out of over 100 competitors in several regional calculus contests while teaching myself more advanced math in my free time.

I then attended the University of Florida, where I majored in mathematics, taking graduate classes and competing in the Putnam Competition. This is also when I started taking tutoring more seriously and began helping hundreds of students over the years with almost any level of math. After getting A's in classes like abstract algebra, advanced calculus, and complex analysis and earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, I decided to pursue a PhD and attempt to realize my long-held dream of becoming a research mathematician.

For the last five years, I've been an instructor and teaching assistant for numerous classes at the University of Florida, including single and multivariable calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra. At the end of my second year of graduate school, I was recognized with an award for excellence in teaching, and out of a desire to further hone my craft as a teacher, I then completed graduate level coursework in education. I try to impart a deep understanding of the material and explain the why behind mathematics. There's no better feeling than that moment when a light bulb turns on and a difficult concept finally clicks. I want all of my students to experience the beauty and elegance that I see in mathematics and to help them achieve the mastery and confidence that they're looking for.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Eight years of experience tutoring math, currently taking graduate mathematics classes at UF, a background of participating in math competitions and learning all the tricks they don’t teach you in class.
AMC (Competition math)

AMC (Competition math)

I participated in a number of math contests growing up, and have coached students preparing for the AMC 8, AMC 10, AMC 12, and AIME, the sequence of contests that ultimately lead to qualification in the USAMO and IMO. I also competed as a mathlete in Mu Alpha Theta and placed multiple times in calculus competitions. I have also coached students that went on to place individually in Mu Alpha Theta at the State and National level. I can lead individual and small size reading groups to work through any Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) book together, or work with a student one on one who loves competing and wants to improve their performance in math contests.
Calculus

Calculus

Some of the most rewarding experiences of my life have come from teaching and tutoring calculus at the college level for over 10 years. I've taught multivariable calculus at the University of Florida and I earned 5s on both the AP Calculus AB and BC exams. A mastery of calculus has been essential for me as a researcher in differential geometry. I love helping students learn the why behind calculus. Often students struggle in calculus because of gaps in their foundational knowledge of algebra or trigonometry, and I have years of experience helping students get over that help. But I've also worked with honors students and mathematics majors at the top universities in the country taking challenging versions of calculus. No matter what your goals, I'm here to guide you and help you become a calculus whiz. Book a free 20 minute consultation with me today!
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

Differential equations form the basis of most mathematical formulations of any field of science or engineering. Whether you're dealing with ordinary or partial differential equations, these equations model situations that involve changing quantities, such as heat transfer, the propagation of electromagnetic waves, or the motion of celestial bodies. I have years of experience using differential equations in my own research to answer questions in pure mathematics and theoretical physics, and have helped teach university level classes in differential equations for years as a graduate student at a major research university. Whether you need help firming up your calculus fundamentals or understanding advanced topics in ordinary or partial differential equations, I have the expertise and skills to help you. Please feel free to schedule a free consultation!
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

Discrete math is essential for higher level math and computer science. I've taken courses on proof-writing, combinatorics, abstract algebra, discrete mathematics and more. As a graduate student in mathematics, I have considerable expertise in discrete mathematics. I also have a background in computer science where mastery of discrete math is often essential.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

My introduction to linear algebra came when I first learned what a matrix was shortly before high school. Since then, I've taken numerous abstract and linear algebra courses while pursuing my bachelors degree and PhD in mathematics. I have led discussion sections and lectured for linear algebra for several years now and have developed a deep understanding of this incredibly rich subject through my study of differential geometry.
Logic

Logic

I was first introduced to logic in high school during math team. I've always loved logic puzzles and the study of logic in its own right, which led to me studying mathematics in high school. All of proof-based math is based on a firm understanding of the fundamentals of logic, so I have considerable expertise in this subject. I'm a graduate student at the University of Florida pursuing my PhD in mathematics.
Physics

Physics

I took three years of physics in high school, including AP Physics B (1 and 2), AP Physics C (Mech and E&M), and IB Physics HL. In addition, I took honors physics courses at UF. I'm currently pursuing a PhD in the mathematics of theoretical physics.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I'm studying to become a research mathematician, so I know all of the math behind precalculus inside and out, including where it comes up in calculus and later. But I also pride myself on taking a flexible and effective approach to teaching mathematics. Precalculus was one of the first places I remember encountering difficulty, whether it was learning the unit circle or what "theta" meant, or dealing with some of the tricker aspects of logarithms or conic sections or combinations and permutations. I'm able to help with even the most challenging AP Precalculus problems so that you can get a 5 and feel confident in your preparation for future math classes. I know what the common stumbling blocks are, and have taught this class several times in college. Let me help you ace your trigonometry or precalculus course!
Real Analysis

Real Analysis

Analysis is one of the major branches of modern pure mathematics. It is essential for understanding calculus on a deep level, as well as for further study into more advanced branches of mathematics like functional and harmonic analysis, topology and differential geometry, and modern probability theory. Analysis should be a tool in every mathematician's kit, and I use it frequently in the course of my research as a PhD candidate. I got A's in real analysis and advanced calculus at both an undergraduate and graduate level, and I'm familiar with a number of books on analysis, including Understanding Analysis by Abbot, Calculus by Spivak, Analysis I and II by Tao, the infamous Principles of Mathematical Analysis by Rudin, and more. I've tutored many students in analysis and can either help with the hardest classes or meet anyone at their level and figure out the best way to help them succeed. I also have experience tutoring complex analysis and complex variables and would be happy to help with either class!
SAT Math

SAT Math

I regularly get a 99th percentile score, if not an 800, whenever I take an SAT Math section. I've taught college mathematics for years, and I have experience tutoring for the SAT.
Statistics

Statistics

Statistics is an extremely useful tool for reasoning with data and making smarter decisions. I'm getting a PhD in mathematics and frequently use statistical reasoning to help me solve difficult problems in my research. I also have numerous years of experience tutoring statistics and taking upper level classes in real analysis and measure theory, which are rigorous fields of math upon which all statistical theory is built. More recently, I've also started studying potential applications of statistics to fields like data science and machine learning! So I'm happy to work with anyone, whether you need help getting through AP Statistics or Introduction to Stats class, or grappling with more advanced topics.

Knowledgeable tutor with a great intuition for numbers

Andres and I went over some introductory number theory and set/logic notation. For our first lesson, we covered quite a lot and he was able to help me learn the concepts rapidly.

Hands down the best tutor I worked with

I want to be clear that I by no means consider myself a smart student. Starting college made it obvious to me there are people who are just naturally better. Unfortunately, I’m NOT one of those people. I was a student who retook Calculus 3 after failing (earning a D) the previous semester. Andres took time to understand my struggles along with addressing gaps of my foundational knowledge in both Calculus 1 and Calculus 2. Upon meeting him for the first time he changed my perspective on what it meant to be smart. He asked me a simple question: “do you consider me smart?” To this I answered saying yes, but he replied back saying “I’m not smarter, I just made more mistakes.” This is a work philosophy that Andres really drills into his study sessions. He encourages an environment to take pride in mistakes and move forward. I’m now happy to say I ended the class with a B+ and a new perspective towards learning. If you are hesitant about choosing Andres, I can ensure you he is WORTH it. His assistance along with a strong work ethic will only set you up for success.

Working with Andres was amazing, easy, very effective and brimming with knowledge!

Andres was asked on a very short notice to steam my son ready for his European entry exam. Andres received all materials and had only 5 weeks to accomplish a rather big task with plenty of new materials to digest together. He did awesome! he dove in, was knowledgeable about the materials, went way beyond was was asked, established a quick bond with my son, and above all, was incredibly reliable throughout these 5 weeks! HIGHLY advisable to work with Andres.
