With experience teaching in both physical and virtual environments, I have taught English and reading courses from the remedial levels through Advanced Placement. I have also worked as a credit retrieval and adult ed. instructor, as well as advisor for varied creative writing clubs and literary/art journals. As such, and with my previous tutoring and substitute experience, I have direct knowledge in not only English and reading, but also in the instruction of standardized testing, math, social studies, Spanish, computer science, and other general ed. course work.

As a result of these successful experiences serving as a teacher in both physical and online environments, I am capable of offering both face-to-face and virtual tutoring support.

I have experience tutoring individuals from varied backgrounds and with varied needs. I have worked with students ranging from young children through adult learners. I have aided students in passing GED and TOEFL examination, raising class grades (multiple letter grades), passing classes with which they've had a history of difficulty, improving written compositions, bolstering subject-matter prowess, learning more of the English language, and improving upon English-language communication-- to name a few. I have worked with students who were both native speakers, as well as those from other countries who had minimal experience with the English language.

Having worked as a mentor teacher for University of Florida interns and also as an English Dept. While working with students in credit retrieval programs and GED coursework, I assisted in breaking down the math so it could be comprehensible for those who were otherwise struggling. Career Development

Career Development

Working with high school students, I have had many opportunities to mentor others in their career development. As an English teacher, business writing (i.e. resumes, cover letters, etc.) is part of the standards that we explore. It is an important area to both teach and help through the feedback/editing stages, as students are just beginning to create, understand, and use such documents. Additionally, college preparation is another area where I have experience mentoring young adults. With this, we explore cover letters, admission essays, applications, standardized testing, career planning, program options, financial aid, etc. Career research and exploration has been reviewed with various students, and we have broken down the process in varied forms as a result. Working to help students recover credits or complete G.E.D. study also ties in nicely with career development discussion and improvement. I have also been called upon repeatedly to give reference, complete reference documents, or pen letters of reference. As a result, I can lend this perspective in helping others with their career development questions and plans. Finally, I have served as a mentor for both intern and experienced teachers, while also acting as English Department Co-Chair. This has given another perspective on career development, as it specifically relates to education.
Elementary (K-6th)

I am a professionally certified teacher of English 6-12 who has a reading endorsement. This reading endorsement branches my English certification to cover many of the elementary level reading and English skills. In addition, I have substitute taught all subjects in elementary school and have a daughter in elementary (as well as a preschool son) in whose education and development I am fully and obviously invested. Her success can also attest to some of my skill. She receives consistently high marks on report cards, tests, and course work. She comes to me for all homework review. She is being tested for gifted and so far has done exceedingly well on all battery of tests. I began teaching her through 2nd grade math when she was in VPK, etc. In addition, I have tutored elementary and middle school children, including nieces and nephews. In addition, my almost-complete ESOL endorsement and the TESOL/TEFL endorsement I've started both apply to this level of skill.

I am heavily active in the education and overall development of my two children, one 7 (entering 2nd grade) and one 2 1/2. I began working with my daughter through 2nd grade math before she even entered kindergarten and she is now entering the second grade with an advanced performance in math and her general elementary studies. She is also being tested for gifted as a result of her overall performance. My father taught me algebra in elementary school and so I have been comfortable with math at an early age and can explain it to younger students, as a result. Additionally, I have experience in all elementary grades and subject areas as I have substitute teaching experience and also outside tutoring experience. This experience goes beyond elementary, as I have taught high school and GED levels and have tutored students in high school and college math.

Note-taking techniques, outlining, exam preparation, standardized testing preparation, active reading, and metacognition are just a few of the areas I have explored with my students over the years. In addition, I have found lessons in study skills helpful when trying to mentor and tutor students as they work to improve their scholastic standing and recover credits or pass the G.E.D. I have taken over 700 hours of professional development through the various school districts in which I worked, and many of these courses incorporated study skills into the subject matter in some form. Completing high school at an honors level and continuing on through undergraduate and graduate studies, I have also had to develop my own repertoire of study skills and have used this experience to help others with their own toolbox of study skills.

She is also very interested in her student’s understanding of the work and how they uniquely comprehend and then she plans her strategy based on how the student learns in order for them to grasp and understand what was difficult to comprehend before. Rachel has been with me for a multitude of years and she has been one of the best writing tutors I have ever had in a long time. My husband and I hired Rachel to assist with keeping our first grader on track due to the pandemic, and the children being out of school. Rachel is patient, kind, and incorporated our daughters interests into each lesson. For example, our daughter likes unicorns so Rachel would start each lesson with a unicorn greeting which set the tone for each session; our daughter was always upbeat and excited for tutoring. Rachel has done an excellent job not only keeping our daughter on track but progressing her- she is ready for the second grade and will be ahead of the curve. We highly recommend Rachel- she communicates well and keeps you abreast of your child’s learning, shares additional work but there is never any pressure to complete it, and she structures her lessons with your child in mind.
