I have a B.Sc., M.S., and a Ph.D. in biology. I am experienced as a teacher, a tutor, and a biologist in a variety of positions. I taught remedial math classes and biology courses at Hillsborough Community College, as well as biology courses at University of South Florida and University of North Florida. I first taught and tutored at a private high school in Tampa in the late 90's. I have taught remedial math courses and advanced undergraduate biology courses. I have experience tutoring special needs and honors students.

I have taught classes ranging in size from 5 to 500. I find I prefer one- on-one and small group settings to assist students having difficulty succeeding in the traditional classroom setting. This allows a tailored approach to get to the core of a student's educational needs. I try to take a socratic approach as much as is practical, asking students questions to allow them or find their own way to an answer logically, or to discover the gaps in a student's knowledge that are hindering their success.

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

B.Sc., M.S., and Ph.D. in biology with teaching experience in biology, and in BSC 2011 specifically.
Biostatistics

Biostatistics

I have completed three graduate courses in biostatistics and used SPSS software analysis package (primarily) to analyze data. I am first author on four peer-reviewed publications and a co-author on several other peer-reviewed publications. I taught ecology laboratory courses at the University of North Florida that I redesigned to give students a thorough grounding in basic statistical analysis in the ecological context.
Botany

Botany

My dissertation research studied plant-insect interaction ecology, examining associational resistance to herbivory in plant communities. I completed undergraduate courses in plant taxonomy and field botany (plant identification), as well as a course in plant anatomy and physiology, of which I taught a laboratory course as well. I have identified plants professionally as an environmental scientist for consulting firms both in the context of wetland delineation and threatened and endangered species surveys. While a graduate student, I was a member of the plant diversity team on a research project that resulted in a peer-reviewed paper. I have assisted in culturing and planting of an endangered Florida Keys endemic cactus.
Ecology

Ecology

I have a B.Sc., M.S., and Ph.D. in biology. My graduate research is in ecology and I have taught ecology lab courses at a university, as well as university lecture courses that include an ecology section.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have taught a review course covering math topics from introductory/ elementary math through basic algebra and geometry. I have completed college math courses through calculus 2 and three graduate courses in biostatistics.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have completed math courses through calculus 2 and graduate biostatistics. I have taught a review course that covers introductory math through basic algebra and geometry.
Zoology

Zoology

I have worked as an environmental scientist for consulting firms. I have participated in surveys for threatened and endangered animal species, including participating in trapping and relocation of gopher tortoise, Florida mouse, and Florida sand skink and other animal incidental animal species without legal protection (such as cotton mouse and hispid cotton rat). I have participated in surveys for Florida scrub jays, another protected Florida endemic species. I worked in Guam under a supervisory research scientist whose remit was the invasive brown tree snake. I completed undergraduate courses in entomology, herpetology, and invertebrate zoology (and once taught it). I monitored a construction project for a roadway alongside a state forest.
