I am an Associate Professor of Biochemistry & Biology and an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (FAAAAI). My work sits at the intersection of environmental exposures, immunology, and respiratory health equity. I am an Associate Professor of Biochemistry & Biology and an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (FAAAAI). My work sits at the intersection of environmental exposures, immunology, and respiratory health equity. I lead mentee-integrated projects that analyze how bioaerosols, indoor dust, and chemical/physical pollutants shape immune and physiological responses—work advanced through collaborations and funded studies spanning CDC-, NIH-, HUD-supported efforts and post-disaster research in Puerto Rico. I direct student-centered research via the Educational Biomarker Discovery Lab (EBDL) and the RIPLRT Institute, and I actively publish and present in exposure science, aerobiology, and immunology.

Across more than a decade in higher education, I’ve taught graduate and undergraduate courses including Biochemistry, Molecular Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Advanced Physiology, Biostatistics/Computational Biology–adjacent modules, and Science & Society. My training includes a Ph.D. in Microbiology (UPR–MSC), a postdoctoral fellowship in Environmental Health Sciences (Johns Hopkins), an ASM Science Teaching Fellowship, and extensive coursework in data science, genomics/bioinformatics, systems biology, and AI.

My teaching philosophy is to build inclusive, psychologically safe, and transformative learning environments where students feel seen, supported, and challenged. I normalize productive mistakes, promote values-driven mentorship, and help students venture beyond their comfort zones to master biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, genetics, computational methods, and public health with real-world relevance.

Experience: I am a scientist and educator with over ten years of experience teaching biological sciences, including Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology, at the undergraduate and graduate levels at universities in the South Florida region. As an Instructor and later as an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor, I have taught Biochemistry across multiple academic years, helping students understand core concepts such as protein structure and function, enzyme kinetics, metabolism, bioenergetics, carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, nucleic acids, and the molecular logic that connects biochemical pathways to human health and disease. My approach emphasizes clear explanations, step-by-step problem solving, and helping students move beyond memorization toward a deeper understanding of how biological systems work at the molecular level. Training: I completed my PhD in Microbiology at the University of Puerto Rico–Medical Sciences Campus in 2010 and postdoctoral training in Environmental Health Sciences at Johns Hopkins University in 2013. In addition to my scientific training, I proactively pursued formal preparation in evidence-based teaching practices, including a Science Teaching Fellowship from the American Society for Microbiology. Since then, I have cultivated a teaching philosophy centered on inclusive, psychologically supportive, and transformative learning environments where students receive validation, structure, guidance, and encouragement as they face challenging scientific material. My goal is to help students build confidence, strengthen analytical thinking, and develop durable learning strategies that support success in Biochemistry and related biomedical sciences.

I am an educator and scientist with more than 15 years of experience using biostatistics in biomedical, environmental health, and population-health research. My work has included study design, data cleaning, descriptive statistics, data visualization, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, p-values, correlation, linear regression, logistic regression, survival analysis, longitudinal data analysis, and interpretation of statistical results. I have applied these methods to research questions involving asthma, respiratory infections, environmental exposures, immune biomarkers, cardiovascular outcomes, and health disparities. When working with students, I focus on helping them understand why a statistical method is appropriate, how to interpret results, and how to communicate findings clearly. I earned my PhD in Microbiology from the University of Puerto Rico–Medical Sciences Campus and completed postdoctoral training in Environmental Health Sciences and Epidemiological Studies at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. I also completed additional training in statistical reasoning, regression models, data science, genomic data science, systems biology, bioinformatics, and computational analysis through Johns Hopkins University, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and the University of California San Diego. My computational experience includes R, Python, and MATLAB for statistical analysis, visualization, modeling, and reproducible research workflows. My teaching approach emphasizes clear explanations, step-by-step reasoning, and supportive guidance for students who may feel intimidated by quantitative material.

I am an educator and scientist with more than 15 years of experience applying epidemiological approaches to respiratory, environmental, infectious-disease, and public-health research. My work focuses on understanding how exposures, infections, immune responses, behaviors, and social or environmental conditions influence disease patterns in populations. I have experience with epidemiological study design, including cross-sectional, case-control, cohort, ecological, and longitudinal approaches. I also work with surveillance data, population-level datasets, environmental exposure data, and respiratory-health outcomes. I help students understand core epidemiology concepts such as incidence, prevalence, risk factors, exposure assessment, measures of association, confounding, bias, effect modification, causality, screening, and interpretation of public-health evidence. My approach emphasizes clear explanations, real-world examples, and helping students connect epidemiological concepts to disease prevention and public-health decision-making. I earned my PhD in Microbiology from the University of Puerto Rico–Medical Sciences Campus in 2010 and completed postdoctoral training in Environmental Health Sciences and Epidemiological Studies at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2013. I am a scientist and educator with over a decade of experience teaching Genetics and related biological sciences at the undergraduate and graduate levels. As an Instructor, Assistant Professor, and now Associate Professor, I have helped students understand core Genetics topics such as Mendelian inheritance, Punnett squares, pedigrees, chromosome structure, DNA replication, transcription, translation, gene regulation, mutations, genetic variation, population genetics, microbial genetics, and the molecular basis of inherited and infectious disease. I have also taught Medical Genetics across multiple academic years, helping students connect inheritance patterns, DNA biology, and gene expression to human health, disease mechanisms, biotechnology, and modern genomic approaches. My sessions emphasize clear explanations, structured problem solving, and conceptual understanding. I help students move beyond memorizing vocabulary by showing how genes, chromosomes, proteins, cells, and traits are connected. Felix is so patient and knowledgeable and really does his best to help you learn and understand the concepts. He's not someone who will give you the answer straightaway but it is definitely for the better since it helps YOU to understand the content and make the connections with his guidance, and the content will stick around in your brain longer. After having him teach me about the various pathways (glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, PPP, TCA, etc.) I managed to raise my exam score by 30 points between exams! Dr. Rivera-Mariani was extremely knowledgeable about immunology and able to help me despite many other tutors feeling uncomfortable answering my questions. He had immediate responses to my questions and asked questions during the tutoring session to allow me to apply the information I learned.
