I am an Associate Professor of Biochemistry & Biology and an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (FAAAAI). My work sits at the intersection of environmental exposures, immunology, and respiratory health equity. I lead mentee-integrated projects that analyze how bioaerosols, indoor dust, and chemical/physical pollutants shape immune and physiological responses—work advanced through collaborations and funded studies spanning CDC-, NIH-, HUD-supported efforts and post-disaster research in Puerto Rico. I direct student-centered research via the Educational Biomarker Discovery Lab (EBDL) and the RIPLRT Institute, and I actively publish and present in exposure science, aerobiology, and immunology.

Across more than a decade in higher education, I’ve taught graduate and undergraduate courses including Biochemistry, Molecular Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Advanced Physiology, Biostatistics/Computational Biology–adjacent modules, and Science & Society. My training includes a Ph.D. in Microbiology (UPR–MSC), a postdoctoral fellowship in Environmental Health Sciences (Johns Hopkins), an ASM Science Teaching Fellowship, and extensive coursework in data science, genomics/bioinformatics, systems biology, and AI.

My teaching philosophy is to build inclusive, psychologically safe, and transformative learning environments where students feel seen, supported, and challenged. I normalize productive mistakes, promote values-driven mentorship, and help students venture beyond their comfort zones to master biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, genetics, computational methods, and public health with real-world relevance.

Biochemistry

Biochemistry

Experience: I am a scientist and educator with ten years of experience (as an instructor, Assistant Professor, and now as Associate Professor) teaching biological sciences, including Biochemistry, at the undergraduate and graduate levels at universities in the South Florida region. As an Instructor, I taught Biochemistry at least once per academic year and as an Assistant Professor for two terms per academic year. Training: After completing my PhD in Microbiology (2010) from the University of Puerto Rico – Medical Sciences Campus and postdoctoral training from Johns Hopkins University (2013), I proactively pursued formal training in pedagogical best practices. This pedagogical training includes a Science Teaching Fellowship (2014-2015) from the American Society of Microbiology. Since then, I've cultivated a teaching philosophy centered on creating inclusive, psychologically supportive, and transformative learning environments where students receive validation, guidance, and support to face educational challenges.
Biostatistics

Biostatistics

My Experience: I am an educator and scientist with over 15 years of experience implementing biostatistical workflows in scientific research projects to address respiratory and environmental health challenges affecting society. My Training: After completing my PhD in Microbiology (2010) from the University of Puerto Rico – Medical Sciences Campus, I followed upon postdoctoral training in Environmental Health Sciences and Epidemiological Studies from the Bloomberg School of Public Health of Johns Hopkins University (2013). I further trained in biostatistics, data sciences, system biology, and bioinformatics (implementing R, Python, and Matlab computational languages) at Johns Hopkins University, Icahn School of Medicine, and UC San Diego. Also, I proactively pursued formal training in pedagogical best practices.
Epidemiology

Epidemiology

Experience: With over a decade as an educator and scientist, I've combined epidemiological, data science, and biological methods to tackle social respiratory health challenges. Training: I obtained my PhD in Microbiology from the University of Puerto Rico – Medical Sciences Campus in 2010. After my PhD, I completed Postdoctoral studies in Environmental Health and Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University in 2013. Subsequent training encompassed data sciences at Johns Hopkins, system biology at Icahn School of Medicine, and bioinformatics at UC San Diego. Additionally, I embraced pedagogical growth, evident from my Science Teaching Fellowship (2014-2015) from the American Society of Microbiology. My teaching philosophy emphasizes an inclusive and supportive learning environment, empowering students to navigate academic challenges.
Genetics

Genetics

Experience: I possess over a decade of experience in the field of genetics and as a professor (as an instructor, Assistant Professor, and now Associate Professor) teaching biological sciences, including Genetics, at both undergraduate and graduate levels in universities. As an Instructor, I conducted at least one Genetics session each semester. Moreover, as an Assistant Professor, I taught Medical Genetics twice per academic year. Training: I earned my PhD in Microbiology in 2010 from the University of Puerto Rico – Medical Sciences Campus. I furthered my expertise with postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins University, concluding in 2013. After this, I actively sought and engaged in formal pedagogical training, including a Science Teaching Fellowship from the American Society of Microbiology for the academic year 2014-2015. My ongoing dedication to teaching is underpinned by a philosophy emphasizing the importance of inclusive, psychologically nurturing, and transformative learning spaces. I believe in validating, guiding, and supporting students as they navigate academic challenges. These training experiences have honed my skills and expertise, particularly in teaching biological sciences with a focus on Genetics.

Another Great Session

Dr Felix is so helpful with bioinformatics topics. He was able to give me real world examples in laymen’s terms so I could feel confident in the subject matter and complete my assignments. I recommend him to anyone seeking a tutor.

Amazing!!!

Felix is so patient and knowledgeable and really does his best to help you learn and understand the concepts. He's not someone who will give you the answer straightaway but it is definitely for the better since it helps YOU to understand the content and make the connections with his guidance, and the content will stick around in your brain longer. After having him teach me about the various pathways (glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, PPP, TCA, etc.) I managed to raise my exam score by 30 points between exams! Would definitely recommend taking lessons with Felix :D

Beyond helpful!

Dr Felix is so nice and understanding. I came into the session very frustrated after a week of struggling with a bioinformatics assignment on my own and left feeling much more confident in the content of my class. After a two hour session, he had helped me understand not only the “how” but the “why” of the assignment. I would recommend him to anyone in need of help.

I enjoyed learning with Felix R!

Felix R is unquestionably well-versed in crafting persuasive proposals with a strong focus on constructing a compelling narrative. Our session started with his question: What are your research goals, and what do you hope to achieve through this endeavor? and that kept me thinking and revisiting many of my methods.

Amazing teacher

Dr. Rivera-Mariani was extremely knowledgeable about immunology and able to help me despite many other tutors feeling uncomfortable answering my questions. He had immediate responses to my questions and asked questions during the tutoring session to allow me to apply the information I learned. Dr. Rivera-Mariani also looked at the lecture slides I sent him prior to the tutoring session so he knew what I was working with. In the hour I spent with him I was able to learn and clarify what my class had be learning for 3 weeks as well as fill in the gaps despite my countless hours of reading. I will be booking future tutoring session and I highly recommend Dr. Rivera-Mariani.
