At Marquette University I completed my BA and MA degrees in English as well as 36 credits beyond the MA. I have over twenty years of experience teaching writing, grammar, ESL, literature, and business writing at the college level.

I was also a Technical Writer.

In every area I tutor in, I provide custom designed handouts and exercises at every single session. I also provide "reinforcement" (i.e. quiz / exam) exercises so that we can review areas that might need more emphasis. I also provide written progress reports as well.

These are areas I've taught and tutored:

Test Preparation (ACT, SAT, GRE, GED)
Analyzing literature and putting your analysis in writing
Essay writing, from start to finish
Research papers
Reading comprehension
Writing formal arguments
Improving grammar and sentence structure
Report writing

When I taught classes as an adjunct professor, I often had as many as 30 students per class. Because of time constraints --- both the students' and my own -- it was impossible to work with each student who needed or requested additional tutoring outside of class. I bring over twenty years of college teaching expertise in composition, grammar, literature, and creative writing to my tutoring sessions -- the focus is on you!

If you need assistance in mastering punctuation, grammar, spelling, reading comprehension, or writing, please contact me! My philosophy as a professor of English is that students are the reason that a teacher has passion for learning.

ACT English

My composite score on the ACT exam was in the 99th percentile. This extremely high score -- combined with my passion for learning and for teaching --will be an asset to your test preparation, and I can assure you of good results. I completed my MA degree in English, with 36 graduate credits beyond my Masters and I have over 15 years of college level teaching experience in subjects from Composition to Literature to Grammar. I prepare custom designed exercises for all of my students for each session and also provide customized review and quiz exercises so that you have constant feed back on your progress.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

My composite score on the ACT exam was in the 99th percentile. It's not just that I had a very high score, I am also proficient in helping test takers "decode" the ways in which standardized tests are structured and to strategize effectively. I provide students with test preparation materials that I design personally for their specific needs and goals. In addition, I provide frequent practice drills so that students can monitor their progress toward their goals!
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I bring ten years of numbers analysis to my tutoring, and can guarantee you progress in your elementary math courses - from word problems, to binomials, trinomials, fractions and percentages. I design specific exercises for each session and provide daily quiz reviews as well so that you can monitor your progress in each session.
English

English

I've taught nearly every type of English course: from creative writing to essay writing, literature to linguistics and grammar. Most English courses - even if the English course is a literature course - focus on the basics of effective writing. I bring many years of college level teaching to your session, and I create personalized study aids for each session. In addition, I also provide review and practice exercises in the specific area we are working on.
Grammar

Grammar

As an undergraduate and graduate student, I've taken courses in the History and Structure of the English Language and in Linguistics. In addition, I have 4 years of experience teaching Basic Grammar to native English speakers and 2 years of Introductory English to non-native English speakers, both of these at the college level. As a Graduate Teaching assistant at Marquette University, I taught eight semesters of Composition 101 in which every third class meeting (or 1/3 of classroom hours) specifically dealt with issues of sentence structure, usage, and punctuation.
Literature

Literature

Literature helps us to understand ourselves and our world in ways that other subjects don't. I completed my MA degree in English and American literature, and I have many years of experience teaching literature courses at the college level. I am passionate about literature: whether it's analyzing individual works of literature, understanding individual authors and works in their historical periods, or appreciating the diversity of ways of looking at human nature and society that literature affords us. At each session, I provide you with study and practice materials that I personally design for your needs and goals, and I provide practice and review material so that you have constant feed back on your progress toward your goal.
Photography

Photography

I taught evening classes in basic camera and darkroom technique at the Uptown Learning Center in Chicago for four years. I'm an accomplished and published photographer with over 20 years of experience, and I owned and ran a portrait and head shot studio in Chicago, specializing in children's and theatrical photography. I studied photography and dark room technique at The School of the Art Institute, Chicago and at Columbia College Chicago. I've transitioned to digital equipment and shoot with the Nikon D810 and Canon EOS 1ds Mark III, among other cameras. I currently specialize in model composites and event photography in Fort Lauderdale and am a current member of the Broward Art Build.
Reading

Reading

Reading is a skill rather than a subject, and reading skills help us to succeed not only in specific high school and college courses but in life over all. The ability to read means that we are able to analyze material and to explain what that material means. By focusing on vocabulary, sentence structure, paragraph development, and the thesis/ theme of written works, we will work together to enhance your reading skills so that you succeed in any number of subjects. In each session we will go through exercises I design specifically for your needs and goals and through frequent review exercises, you will have constant feedback on progress.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

On the SAT exam, I scored in the 96th percentile overall. I bring to your SAT preparation a very high skill level in helping you to understand how standardized tests are designed and how to strategize for your exam so that you maximize the amount of time you are given to read passages and to answer the reading questions. In addition, in all your sessions, we will do practice drills so that you can monitor your progress toward your goal.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

On my SAT, my composite score was in the 96th percentile -- the writing component of the SAT is designed to test one's knowledge of paragraph development, sentence logic, grammar, and argumentation. With 20 years of teaching experience and years of test preparation facilitation, I can assist you with understanding how standardized tests are designed, how to maximize your test time, and how to decode the pattern of questions in the SAT writing section. Each of our sessions will include material I design specifically for your needs, and each session will end with a test review, so that you can monitor your progress and reach your SAT goal.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

A rich vocabulary is the main building block of learning, because a strong vocabulary helps us not only to comprehend written works, a strong vocabulary makes us effective speakers and writers. As a college English teacher, I have always focused on the vocabulary of the written works we studied - the more words we know, the world itself becomes all the more colorful and rich and textured. By working through exercises that I custom design for your goals, each session will end with a review exercise that will help you measure the results of the new vocabulary you master.
Writing

Writing

It doesn't matter what level of learning we are at - grade school, high school, college or graduate school -- writing is the single most important tool that will carry us through and beyond education toward a successful career or profession. In our ever more complex world, our ability to express complex ideas, to explain complex technical or scientific matters, to share political and personal views, to manage a business -- all these require the skill of clear, logical, lively, interesting, and grammatically correct writing! With twenty years of college teaching experience in English, Writing and ESL, I bring much insight, skill and passion to the teaching of writing. Each session will reflect a personalized approach to what your desired goals are, and each session will include a review of work done to date, so that you can monitor progress toward your goals.

Great Teacher!

Matthew is very knowledgeable in many subjects and patient. He came very prepared for our first meeting with a lot of materials and was able to give me some great tricks on how to answer questions on the GRE. I believe with his help I can significantly bring up my score for my upcoming GRE exam.

knowledgeable, attentive, resourceful tutor

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Matt has been extremely accommodating with his schedule, since we had to do a crash course for the GRE in only one week. He has been resourceful and attentive to my concerns/weaknesses, compiling specific study materials including examples, lists, drills, explanations, etc directly correlating to what I should focus on. He is a wealth of knowledge, professional, patient, and a joy to be around.
