About Tarra

Bio

Hi, my name is Tarra, or Ms. Tarra if you feel formal.
I teach because I love teaching. I love teaching anything.... and I am very good at making students love a subject. I teach the meaning of a subject, and why it works, so you don't have to memorize as many rules. People who say they hate math are my favorites, as I can get them loving math best.... this has never yet failed, so give it a try.
I get jobs by simply saying "You should hire me, I am very smart". This is true, but...

Hi, my name is Tarra, or Ms. Tarra if you feel formal.

People who say they hate math are my favorites, as I can get them loving math best.... this has never yet failed, so give it a try.
I get jobs by simply saying "You should hire me, I am very smart". This is true, but the love of teaching is even more important, as is the love of learning. I have done a great deal of teacher training in the past 25 years, in many disciplines, because I am always learning to be a better teacher. I care very much for all of my students, from 3 year olds to seniors.
My aim in tutoring school subjects is to make homework, tests, and getting good grades significantly easier, as I am aware of how much homework kids get these days. My track record is very good, with every student I've ever taught going up at least 1 grade level, and often as much as 2 levels (C to A).
My aim in teaching music is to be able to express yourself with good technique that is healthy for your body, beautiful tone, and a love for the instrument, for music theory, composition, or any other aspect of music. I like and teach all types of music, from classical to metal/jazz/rock/country in both guitar and violin.
My degrees are:
B.Sc Chemistry, Winner of Chemistry Prize (top student of year) and Most Promising Research Student
M.Sc. Chemistry, 1st Class Honors, University of Auckland, minor in Physics, 1985 - University of Auckland, NZ
B.M. in Classical Guitar Performance, minor in Violin & Composition
M.M. in Music 2014; Florida Atlantic University
This is just to show you that I know what I am doing....

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is the root of all that’s to come, and kids that get stuck there have a really hard time in the coming years. It’s the best time to work in it, because understanding things at the beginning is by far the most important place, making now the most important time… this is my favorite sort of teaching… I love seeing someone start understanding things!
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have taught Algebra 2 from middle school, high school and college levels for the last 30 years, first in New York City and Brooklyn in several colleges, then in Florida with some colleges, a middle school with a gifted student class, and as a private tutor through this time. Math of all sorts is a favorite subject to teach for me. I am very good at helping people to understand the subject enough to make it easier, quicker and more enjoyable to learn it and do well.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have a Masters' in Chemistry, and have taught Chemistry at several colleges and tutored many students. I work on helping my students to gainthe understanding and go from there. Once I watch you solve problmes, I'll be able to see where you can improve and bring your grade up.
Common Core

Common Core

The Common Core math curriculum is very much like the math I have taught children for the last 35 years. It was not called Common Core back then, but it is very similar to the Chicago Math Project, which I taught to middle school kids, as well as resembling the teaching style of my father who was a math and science teacher. I have taught at elementary school levels and ages, up through to college levels in the greater NYC area and in Fort lauderdale, FL. I have been tutoring for at least that long. I am very good at teaching the understanding of a subject which makes that subject easier and a lot more fun, and this works very well for children. I can make the Common Core curriculum make sense to them, and I can do it in a fun way that they enjoy.
Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

My two music degrees, B.M.and M.M. had a strong composition component, with every course or lesson possible taken, every composition concert written for and played in, member of the composition club, and writer of a variety of music. I specialize in classical guitar these days, but the principals are the same... I have a strong background in songwriting as well, which is more similar than you think!!
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have done a great deal of training in early childhood and elementary school ages through various methods. I am a trained Suzuki teacher, where children are my main students, I have had some Waldorf training and some Montessori training, and have taught many, many children privately. In every case, they have gotten much better in their subject, enjoy their subject much more, don’t have to struggle so much because they understand the principles, and don’t end up making a decision that they aren’t good at something! This makes me happy. Math is one of my favorite things to teach, and my enthusiasm is contagious. I also have a lot of fun ways to keep younger children engaged.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

I have taught science at all levels from elementary school, through middle school, high school and college. I love science and love teaching it at any level. I teach the understanding of a subject. This is my forte. Once you know WHY something is a certain way, it is no longer a matter of memorization. It makes sense and becomes easier, so grades go up accordingly, and students begin to enjoy the subject at least a bit more. In 30 years of teaching this has never failed to be true.
Guitar

Guitar

I have been teaching guitar for 50 years. I still play and perform in many styles. I have an active guitar studio, Suzuki Guitar certification, have won competitions, played in international festivals, been reviewed favorably by the Miami Herald. More importantly in this case, my students also win competitions, love playing and play beautifully.
Music Theory

Music Theory

My first intro to music theory was from a brilliant jazz guitar teacher in NY City in the late 1980’s. Later I did Bachelor and Master’s degrees in music, with the full complement of classical music theory classes in which I did very well. Since then, I teach theory with a mix of these very different styles towards writing music and songwriting. It’s a good mix.
Precalculus

Precalculus

My Bachelors and Masters in Chemistry had strong math and physics minors, and math of allnsirts is my favorite thing to teach . I have tutored many young people through high school and college math, with good results all round.
Songwriting

Songwriting

I started writing songs about 43 years ago, attended many courses, joined many songwriter support groups, and have taught others the same skills for the last 20 years. I have been published for songs written for others, and those written for myself are available on all the streaming platforms. I am very encouraging, and know a lot of good tricks.
Violin

Violin

I have been seriously playing violin and fiddle for 25 years and getting paid to play for various professional jobs for that last 22 years of this time. I am fully Suzuki certified as a teacher and have an active studio of kids and adults who win competitions, make money busking, and play beautifully and joyously in many genres. I was concertmaster for two years in my college orchestra when I went back to school for two music degrees, and graduated summa cum laude, with A's in all my subjects all 5 years. I also fiddle, dabble in jazz violin, have often played with rock and country bands, and love to teach in these genres as well as in the classical music world. I have taught people from age 3 to age 89, believing that it is never too late and rarely too early.
