My name is Conrad. I am attending the University of Florida Wertheim School of Engineering, and I’m also a musician/composer.
As president of Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society) in high school, although we competed in regional competitions solving differential equations, we also tutored free of charge to many of the lower-classmen of our school. Oftentimes, this was the hardest part of being a member of the honor society, as the concepts that come so easily to you don’t come easily to someone else. As such, you kind of have to swallow your ego and connect with the student. I prefer to use visual aids to explain abstract concepts, and that has made the tutoring process a lot easier, whether it be pieces of paper or a virtual whiteboard
I compose music in the baroque style, which means I use concepts from music theory daily. It has practically become an intuition for me. Through teaching private violin lessons, I’ve come to realize, however, that music theory does not come as easily to others as it does to me. It’s very unintuitive and daunting for most, especially the elementary-school-age children I teach violin to. As such, I have to come up with creative ways to explain it, going beyond the “every good boy does fine” trick of memorizing the notes of the line pitches in treble clef. I really enjoyed AP Music Theory, and I helped many of my classmates through a lot of the course. I’d love to teach music theory.
Music Theory and Mathematics are almost two sides of the same coin, that being applied logic. These concepts are daunting because they are different languages from the ones we speak. But I can teach these.
