Hi...I'm Michelle! I am a certified teacher and I have been teaching and tutoring English Language Learners and Language Arts students for over ten years. I have a Master's of Arts degree in Instruction. I specialize in teaching conversational English and pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading skills, and helping you gain the confidence you need to be successful whether that be to succeed in school, pass a test, communicate with others, or to get a job. I have experience providing one-on-one tutoring as well as leading small group classes in companies that employ non-native English speakers.

My love for tutoring and teaching comes from contributing to students' growth in whichever areas they're wanting to improve and watching my students' confidence increase throughout our time together. I believe being patient, passionate, and using relatable, real-life examples are so important in helping with the learning process and these are some of my greatest strengths.

My approach to teaching is to make lessons engaging and relevant. I want our time together to be worth your time (and money). My goal is for you to leave each lesson feeling more knowledgeable and able to apply what you've learned in whichever situation or context right away. When we first meet, it's my goal to get to know your background, your current skill level (through questions and assessments), and goals so that I can be the most effective tutor for you.

Since most of my teaching and tutoring experience has been with English learners, I specialize in the areas of reading (fluency, comprehension, vocabulary), speaking and pronunciation, writing, and grammar.

My schedule is quite flexible, and Online lessons work great for me as well. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to having the opportunity to work with you and/or your child!

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I have a lot of experience both in the classroom and through tutoring, helping students with test taking and reading strategies in preparation for taking standardized tests such as the ACT/SAT, Accuplacer, GED, and TABE.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I have helped hundreds of English Language Learners of all ages gain confidence and improve their English over the past 9 years. The following instructional areas are those that I have the most experience in: grammar, writing skills (including punctuation), reading comprehension, speaking and pronunciation, and academic vocabulary.
Grammar

Grammar

I taught adult English Language Learners for over 7 years with a heavy focus on grammar and using proper tenses. My students' grammar knowledge varied from beginning to advanced. The majority of the grammar rules I taught were in the context of speaking and writing.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I spent over 7 years teaching ESL with a focus on writing, academic language, and APA formatting.
Reading

Reading

I've completed STAR training (Student Achievement in Reading), which focuses on effective, evidence-based practices in the four major components of adult reading instruction: alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
TOEFL

TOEFL

I have helped adult ESL students prepare for this exam. I taught a lot about test taking strategies, reading comprehension skills such as using context clues and inference, academic vocabulary, grammar, and writing.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I taught academic vocabulary to intermediate to advanced adult English Language Learners (ELL). The vocabulary I taught depended on students' needs. For beginning students, I taught mostly Tier 1 (basic) vocabulary to help them in job interviews and interacting with English speakers more confidently within the community. For intermediate to advanced students, I taught Tier 2 (academic) vocabulary to help with understanding college texts, career readiness, and standardized tests such as TABE, Accuplacer, GED, and ACT/SAT.

Easy going, teaches very well

Great. She teaches very well. Easily and well taught. Have materials to help, and she was able to slowly paced for my husband to learn. Respectful and well mannered. No negativities when teaching and tutoring. Gave feedback and advises to what next to practice and focus on. She’s a very nice person.
