I am fortunate; I get to do the best job in the world. With a Master's degree in Learning and Instruction, I have worked in education through my entire career, first in university enrollment management and then as a high school social studies teacher. I have worked with thousands of amazing students, supporting them in mastering history, government and psychology concepts, as well as helping them write essays that powerfully convey their knowledge and experience.

I have taught US Government, economics, American history, sociology, psychology, and several other courses, and am passionate about understanding how the past has shaped the present, and helping students recognize their critical role in protecting and preserving democracy.

In addition to teaching course curricula, I work with students on writing skills, standardized test preparation, college essays, and graduate literature reviews and research papers. I have learned that teaching is best when it helps students develop the ability to regulate their own learning and implement meta-cognitive strategies that will serve them in college and beyond.

COOP/HSPT

COOP/HSPT

I have been working with students as they prepare for the HSPT exam for more than seven years, and have a strong track record of bringing scores up to meet private school requirements. I can help students with reading comprehension, as well as with analogy, verbal logic, synonym, antonym, categorization, and grammar items in the language section of the exam. I was a certified teacher for nearly twenty years prior to retirement, and have a 5-star rating on Wyzant.
ISEE

ISEE

I am a certified teacher with more than five years of experience helping students improve their ISEE, SSAT and HSPT scores. I teach students how to read passages more deeply, and use methodical approaches to determining answers. My students also learn how to build their vocabulary, and master analogy and sentence completion questions. I do not simply give my students practice questions, but provide deeper instruction that serves them well on the exam, and in the classroom once they have achieved their school admission goal.
PSAT

PSAT

My interest in working with students in test prep stems from watching, as a proctor, my classroom students take the exams without any preparation and using no strategies that could have helped them achieve scores that accurately reflect their abilities. I developed an SAT and ACT test preparation at my school, and saw tremendous improvement in the results of the students who attended my after-school class. I have spent a great deal of time researching strategies and techniques, but my knowledge of cognitive psychology has been the best guide to helping students achieve scores that allow them access to the colleges and universities they want to attend.

SAT Writing

SAT Writing

As a teacher, I have assisted my own high school students in crafting strong admission and scholarship essays and building their knowledge of grammar and sentence structure rules for the SAT and ACT examinations. Having successfully written literature reviews and research proposals, I also assist college and graduate students in how to identify relevant literature and structure their writing to successfully meet course requirements.
SSAT

SSAT

I have17 years of experience in secondary school teaching, and was rated as outstanding for the last fifteen years. I have a Master's degree in Learning and Instruction, and have extensive writing experience from my work in university enrollment management prior to becoming a teacher. I have tutored students taking the SSAT, ISEE and HSPT for more than eight years, so am very familiar with the types of questions on the test, time restrictions, and the strategies that students can use to increase their scores. I teach students how to build bridge sentences for analogies, how to use Latin and Greek roots, prefixes and suffixes to determine the meaning of unknown words, and how to insert their own words into sentence completion questions and then match their words with the answer choices. I also was a test item writer for several years for the State of Florida, so I can show students how to seek out and avoid attractors and distractors in reading comprehension answer choices.

I was a University Enrollment Management Director and Consultant for nineteen years prior to becoming an educator. I have evaluated countless applicant essays while serving on faculty admissions committees. I have also managed the publication of marketing and informational material for several universities.

Susan is such a treasure!

Susan has been helping our son in his applications to independent high schools, first by helping him prepare for the SSAT writing section and then on his essays and short answers. Susan has been a godsend to our family. Our son has really enjoyed working with her and she has helped tremendously. She spent a session helping us with our parent statements and her feedback was invaluable. We are really grateful for the help she has provided our family.

Patient and Empathetic

I scheduled a session with Susan because I had been struggling to comprehend the intricacies of a literature review. She took the time to explain the purpose and procedural steps that helped me get started on a writing task that I had been avoiding. With her guidance, the task made much more sense and she assisted me to create a plan that made sense for me.

Amazing Expirence

Mrs. Susan asked great questions that helped me navigate the complicated process of college essays. She helped me dig deep inside my mind to recall memories I didn't even remember. She was really patient and she has excellent grammar. 100% would recommend her for any college essay writers

My daughter likes teacher Susan B. Susan spent a bit time chatting with my daughter getting to know her needs and goals. And she gave suggestions about working on improving vocabulary.

Funny and very skilled tutor!

Susan helped me correct and improve (a lot) my personal statements for my master's applications. We also worked on an essay, her writing is excellent and she is adorable (but won't hesitate to tell you if you're wrong). Highly recommend!!!!

Wonderful tutor!

Susan has been incredible helping my son complete his college essay’s. She understood his goals and ideas and seamlessly helped him transfer those ideas into well written essay’s. She is wonderful to work with. We will be staying in touch and hopefully working with her again once my son is in college.

Patient and skillful tutor

Susan mentored my 16-year-old daughter through her college essay. The essay was written from scratch and is thoughtful, appropriate, and true to my daughter's character. Susan was extremely patient and flexible throughout the process which was challenging on our end. I'm so grateful to have found Susan.

Knowledgeable, structured & fun!

Susan is working with my teenage son on SSAT prep, and she definitely knows her stuff. I appreciate how she uses her knowledge of cognitive processes and incorporates them into the lesson, somehow in a fun way! I feel much more confident that my son will be much better prepared for the test come fall, thanks to Susan!
