Hi! My name is David, and I would love to help you build confidence and succeed in math. I hold a Master's in Education from St. John's University and a bachelor's degree in Economics with a minor in Mathematics from Bowdoin College. I am professionally certified to teach Grades 7–12 Mathematics and spent four years teaching Algebra I in New York City public schools. I also taught high school mathematics at an international school in Shanghai, China. These experiences have given me the opportunity to work with students from a wide range of academic backgrounds and learning styles, and they have shaped my belief that every student can succeed when given the right support and high expectations.
My teaching philosophy is simple: high expectations lead to high results. I believe that students grow the most when they are challenged appropriately, because the tougher the problem, the greater the opportunity to develop mathematical thinking and confidence. As an Algebra I teacher, I built a strong foundation in helping students master algebraic concepts, making me equally well prepared to tutor Prealgebra, since it provides the essential building blocks for success in Algebra. During our sessions, I focus on developing conceptual understanding rather than memorization. I use strategic questioning to guide students toward discovering solutions for themselves, while emphasizing mathematical vocabulary so they can clearly explain their reasoning and communicate their thinking with confidence.
In addition to teaching high school mathematics, I have tutored fifth-grade math one-on-one, giving me experience working with younger learners as well. Whether I'm helping an elementary student strengthen foundational skills or preparing a high school student for success in Algebra, I strive to identify misconceptions early and address them with carefully chosen practice problems and clear explanations. I have worked with students ranging in age from 9 to 19.
