Back in 1991, Joy’s mother, got her involved in Yoga in NYC. Joy took her first Yoga teacher training back in 1992 with Erich Schiffman and Rod Stryker at Yogaworks in Santa Monica, CA.  A few years later, she was certified through Ana Forrest's training at Forrest Yoga. Joy has been truly fortunate to have been trained by many of the 'greats' such as Tim Feldman, Alan Finger, Sharon Gannon, Julie Gudmestad, David Life, Kino McGregor,  and David Miliotis.  Each has brought a different depth to a facet of Joy's knowledge and yoga journey. Her yoga credentials are now held through the World Yoga Federation as a Grand Master and certified 200 & 500 hour Teacher Training via her business, PranAnanda Yoga & Ayurveda.
Her classes are especially focused on alignment and giving modifications or advancements to individualize the practice for each student.  Her background of teaching Anatomy and Physiology at the Massage School of Santa Monica gives her that advantage to detail.
Joy graduated from Dr. David Frawley's 300 hr. Ayurvedic Healing Course, then from The Ayurvedic Institute in 2021 (under Dr. Vasant Lad’s tutelage) as an Ayurvedic Consultant and completed the second year, graduating as an Ayurvedic Practitioner in 2022.
Joy is a true believer that Ayurveda and Yoga are for EVERY body and that with steady practice, these ancient healing arts can heal the world through their beautiful and profound simplicity. She creates a safe atmosphere, whether you've been doing yoga/practicing Ayurveda for decades or are a tentative newbie.  She prides herself in translating these Eastern modalities in a clear and non-intimidating manner.

Yoga

My lineage of Yoga is from Hatha Yoga with a heavy influence from Ashtanga and Iyengar Yoga, with a strong emphasis on the breath (Pranayama). I have taught private and group yoga sessions throughout the U.S. and worked with all levels of students from absolute beginners to advanced practitioners. Having taught Anatomy & Physiology gives me the advantage of being able to work with various injuries, body types, and all ages. I've taught Yoga to Special Needs high school students, Chair Yoga to seniors, Pre/Postnatal Yoga to new Mommas; held workshops on Yoga for Depression, Menopause, Back Bending, Hip Opening, chanting, and meditation.
