I am an experienced teacher as well as former assistant principal in charge of foreign languages. I am licensed to teach French, Spanish and Italian,English/ESL and writing. I also have a license in Supervision/Foreign Languages. I have 15 years of formal experience in teaching French, Spanish, Italian and ESL as well as supervision of the Foreign Language Department as Assistant Principal in the NYC Board of Education. I served as test examiner for the NYC Board of Education in which I examined potential teachers of French and Spanish. In addition, I served as consultant to book publisher DC Heath and evaluated and wrote portions of French and Spanish text books. When my children were born, I decided to stay home to raise them and left the public schools. I continued to tutor and teach privately and have continued to do so for the past 20 years.
I have been fortunate to develop a rapport with my students. The best compliment I have ever had from a student who attended the school where I taught was, "You were my favorite teacher and I never even had you!" It is important to make language learning fun and entertaining so that students do not realize that they are actually speaking and understanding the foreign language. It is best when language learning develops naturally in a relaxed setting. By combining audio lingual methods with song, repetition, and an environment where the target language is used to the utmost, students develop the ability to communicate with ease and pleasure. It is most important for the teacher/tutor to be flexible and to tailor the lesson to the needs of the individual learner.
Even though I have native fluency in French, Spanish and Italian, my first language is English. I therefore understand the process by which a speaker of English learns a foreign language.
Learning a foreign language is fun with the right teacher. Call me and you will see!
