Hi, I’m Sonya! I will be studying mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech. I’ve taught a variety of subjects across different environments, from math competition drills with middle school groups to linear algebra reviews with undergrad students. I previously led summer math classes for incoming high school freshmen, overviewing Algebra 2, Geometry, Precalculus, and basic Number Theory. I have worked one-on-one with dozens of middle/high schoolers and undergrad students in subjects ranging from Pre-Algebra to Multivariable Calculus/Calc III, raising grades by entire letters. I have helped home-schooled students catch up on years of missed elementary school math and Pre-Algebra. I am happy to work with students from a diverse set of backgrounds and lives, adapting my teaching style to suit their needs.
I have participated in math competition for 4 years, receiving distinctions such as 1st Place Matrices and Vectors nationally. My experience with math competition has shaped my tutoring style, and I’ve found success by: (1) determining where the student’s confusion lies, (2) breaking down the concepts in an intuitive way, and (3) reapplying the student’s understanding to the problems at hand. Patience and connection are key, both of which are skills I bring to the table. I enjoy connecting with the students I teach, encouraging them to ask questions and helping them build confidence.
Over time, I’ve learned that students are often hesitant to open up to their tutors out of fear or discomfort. I strive to provide an environment centered on positive learning, no matter where your student is starting from. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions!
