Hi, I’m Sonya! I will be studying mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech. I’ve taught a variety of subjects across different environments, from math competition drills with middle school groups to linear algebra reviews with undergrad students. I previously led summer math classes for incoming high school freshmen, overviewing Algebra 2, Geometry, Precalculus, and basic Number Theory. I have worked one-on-one with dozens of middle/high schoolers and undergrad students in subjects ranging from Pre-Algebra to Multivariable Calculus/Calc III, raising grades by entire letters. I have helped home-schooled students catch up on years of missed elementary school math and Pre-Algebra. I am happy to work with students from a diverse set of backgrounds and lives, adapting my teaching style to suit their needs.

I have participated in math competition for 4 years, receiving distinctions such as 1st Place Matrices and Vectors nationally. My experience with math competition has shaped my tutoring style, and I’ve found success by: (1) determining where the student’s confusion lies, (2) breaking down the concepts in an intuitive way, and (3) reapplying the student’s understanding to the problems at hand. Patience and connection are key, both of which are skills I bring to the table. I enjoy connecting with the students I teach, encouraging them to ask questions and helping them build confidence.

Over time, I’ve learned that students are often hesitant to open up to their tutors out of fear or discomfort. I strive to provide an environment centered on positive learning, no matter where your student is starting from. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions!

ACT Math

ACT Math

I've tutored dozens of students in SAT and ACT math over the last 3 years. I don't just teach how to solve problems - I teach students how to comprehend concepts and reapply solutions to different problems, ensuring they are prepared no matter what questions they'll encounter on their exam. I also show students how to use Desmos to save time and double check their solutions, while preparing them to manage their time well during the test.
AMC (Competition math)

AMC (Competition math)

I have participated in many math competitions (including AMC 10/12, AIME, Math Prize for Girls/MP4G, Mu Alpha Theta, M3, Purple Comet, and more), qualifying for AIME 4 times and winning 1st place distinctions regionally (FAMAT), nationally (MAθ), and internationally (Purple Comet). I've taught weekly classes preparing students for MATHCOUNTS, AMC 8/10/12, and FAMAT, many of these students going on to win individual distinctions at these competitions. I've written math competition tests myself. As a test writer, I have a unique perspective to approaching and solving math competition problems. I believe in making math as easy as possible, focusing on finding weaknesses and teaching students how to apply concepts rather than memorizing solutions.
