Hello! My name is Kevin Holcomb, and I am a retired, middle school math teacher, with over ten years of teaching and tutoring experience. While serving in public education, I primarily taught 7th and 8th grade mathematics. Hello! My name is Kevin Holcomb, and I am a retired, middle school math teacher, with over ten years of teaching and tutoring experience. While serving in public education, I primarily taught 7th and 8th grade mathematics. I was responsible for teaching pre-algebra and algebra courses, in a variety of settings (including, but not limited to: full inclusion, honors, and an all-boys class). Each year, I successfully met or exceeded state passage goals for standardized testing (> 75%). In 2013, and again in 2014, I was selected by the graduating class as one of the most influential teachers throughout their entire time in school.

I initially graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1996 with a degree in Business Administration. Next I attended Wright State University for Education (4.0 GPA), and Penn State University for Mathematics (3.37 GPA), in order to obtain licensure in secondary mathematics. Later, I attended Grand Canyon University where I started my masters in Education (4.0 GPA). I successfully passed the PRAXIS for business (670), secondary mathematics (145), and secondary education (169).

Later in my career I was promoted to the district’s academic coach for mathematics. I was hand-selected by the superintendent to coach and lead my peers, based on historical test scores.
In this position, I was responsible for (25) middle & high school math teachers.

I also have experience teaching online (during COVID-19: academic years 2019/2020 and 2020/2021) and have tutored online for Varsity Tutors. Thus, I am extremely knowledgeable (and have had great success) on a variety of online learning platforms.

I have tremendous success helping students learn how to do mathematics. I present material in a simple, basic, easy-to-understand way. I am dedicated to helping students with their math homework, test prep, study skills and raising and/or maintaining their grades. I guarantee that I will make a difference!

Common Core

Throughout my tenure as a public school teacher, I took the initiative to master the common core for middle school and high school mathematics. As the district's mathematics - academic coach, one of my primary responsibilities was to ensure all (25) middle school and high school math teachers were completely familiarized with each of the domains, clusters and standards for their grade and content level. I personally published complete PowerPoint Presentations on each grade's common core standards (5th grade - 26 standards, 6th grade - 29 standards, 7th grade - 23 standards, and 8th grade - 28 standards), to help students, parents, faculty and staff understand the spirit of each standard. One slide was dedicated to each standard and outlined the specific concepts, terms, theorems, definitions, steps, and processes being assessed. This 106 slide deck presentation served as an outstanding teaching tool and resource to help ensure all parties involved understood what mathematical concepts the common core standards were focused on. The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. These practices rest on important “processes and proficiencies” with longstanding importance in mathematics education.
