Hi, my name is Alan. I am a college graduate who is deaf and fluent in ASL, but can also speak and lipread well. I have been teaching/tutoring ASL privately for 18+ years with individuals on a one-to-one basis or in a group setting at various locations around the Bay area. I have also been tutoring online for 12+ years. In addition, I had volunteered to teach a sign language class to a group of hearing students at a public library weekly for several years. I would love to help you learn...

Truly interested in the success of his students
We were looking for an ASL tutor to help my son study for his final exam. We were hoping to find someone local, so he could do in person tutoring. I was skeptical of the on-line forum. When we could not find any one local, I looked at the on-line options, and after reading his reviews, we went with Alan and we are so happy we did. My son said that Alan was really good about teaching grammar, and very interested and devoted to my son's success. My son was convinced he was going to fail his final exam and the class, and after a few study sessions with Alan he was so much more confident and happily did well on his Final and passed his class. I would recommend Alan to anyone needing help with ASL in a heartbeat.

Knowledgeable and kind
Alan is reviewing some intro words with me and I’m learning some new ones along the way. He is kind and patient. He emails me materials I can work on through the week. I am really enjoying his lessons and so grateful to find someone so kind.

Kind, Helpful, and Patient!
Alan got back to me very quickly to set up a session and I already feel I've learned so much. I have been using Lifeprint to learn, but needed an environment where I could practice receptive skills without being too nervous. We've only had one session so far and I already feel I've started making a big improvement. He spelled words for me, and I'd sign back if I knew the sign. When I didn't know, he would walk me through learning the sign. I woke up still remembering most of what we reviewed... Which is a big deal to me as I have a memory disorder. :) If you're nervous to start practicing, I highly recommend practicing with Alan! I felt no judgement even when I spent the first ten minutes asking him to explain every other sign... And it was just the introduction to what we would be practicing. Haha. Our session was fun and time flew by. Officially, we just went over a list of words— but I walked away with so much more than just a few new signs under my belt. I gained confidence! I'm looking forward to future sessions.

Good Start with Alan
I had my first ASL lesson with Alan and it was a positive experience. He was kind and took the time to support me in the way I learn best. Alan was patient, going slow and repeating signs as needed, which I really appreciated. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn with him.

Friendly and Patient Tutor
I really enjoy working with Alan. Typically, we chat for about half an hour or more, giving me an opportunity to practice my receptive and expressive ASL skills. For the second half of the lesson we work on translating sentences, or poems/texts that I bring to the lesson because we found this is something that I enjoy. He makes this a team effort, asking me which sign I think might be more appropriate for a word, given the context. Alan does a great job in making sure to correct my signs without judgement, never making me feel bad that I keep forgetting. :)

A very patient and kind tutor
Alan is teaching my son ASL in-person. His responses through Wyzant as we have been setting up the tutoring sessions have been prompt. His lesson summary is helpful, so I know what was covered in each session. My son is learning a lot from Alan and will continue his lessons. We are grateful for his expertise and support.

Easy going and helpful
Seems to be pretty good at being patient even though I'm not a particularly quick learner. Getting through it without too much stress. Guess I'm supposed to write more here but I'm not the best at this
