Hello,
My name is Darcy and I love to teach. I have been an educator and therapist for over 20 years now. My educational background is in music, music therapy, and education. I have had a great career helping people with so many different needs, from ages 6 weeks to 90 years old. For many years, I worked as a therapist with adults and children. My graduate studies were in Education/Special Education, and I taught in Special Education for several years. For the past 18 years, I have been working with young children in music education with an overlay of social, motor and academic skills incorporated into the learning environment. Piano is my primary musical instrument, and I have had piano students of all ages for over 10 years. Once in a while, I have had the opportunity to teach basic lessons on guitar and mandolin as well. Additionally, I home schooled my son from grades 5-8 in all subjects. That was so much fun! My B.S. in Music Therapy is from the University of Minnesota and my masters studies and certification in Education/Special Education is from Portland State University in Portland, Oregon.

My teaching style is eclectic--I tailor each teaching opportunity to the unique needs and strengths of the individual or group. I prefer to adapt to the situation and create the most positive environment for learning to occur. Every student and every group is different--I may experiment a bit with which approach is most successful in that learning environment. I do this by listening carefully to the students--how they express themselves, what they feel they need from the situation, and what is important to them.
I have helped people learn in so many different environments--in schools, in hospitals, in groups and in one-on-one situations. My subject areas have included academics, personal growth and mental health, and music-related topics.
For the past 18 years, I have been working both as a therapist and a teacher in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I am relocating to Miami Beach at the end of March 2014, and will begin

Piano

My B.S. degree is in Music Therapy, which heavily emphasizes Music Education. As part of the degree program, there were 2 years of Music Education coursework, which included music history, music theory, music composition, music performance, ensemble work, coursework on performance in brass, strings, woodwinds, percussion, and keyboard. I have taught general music classes for 18 years to young students, and have also taught music theory and piano instruction for 10 years. I have taught students from age 5 to 55 in private piano lessons for 10 years. I approach each student as an individual and tailor lessons to meet their needs and wants. I provide a very interactive approach, literally hands-on at times with my very young students to help model correct technique. I have a heavy emphasis on theory and technique as part of weekly lessons. Many of my students learn music theory first through their piano lessons, and go on to apply it to other instruments as well. Many of my students continue with piano lessons while singing in the school choir, or playing in the band. There are always opportunities for personal choices in relation to a student's repertoire pieces, as long as the student's skills will develop through learning the music. Performance is a part of piano lessons, and my students recite at least once a year, and more if they are motivated. As my students progress, and with my more mature students, lessons take on a direction which best benefits the student's musical interests and desires for playing. This means we may emphasize classical music, or spend much more time applying theory to the ability to read from chord charts for playing jazz and popular music. Practice is very important for progress. Students in private piano are expected to have time and to practice nearly every day. My B.S. Music Therapy is from the University of Minnesota.
Special Needs

Special Needs

My graduate studies at Portland State University were in Education/Special Education. I was a certified teacher in the Yamhill ESD in Oregon and taught in the public schools there for several years. I have been an educator for over 20 years, and have taught special education in preschool and elementary school. I have been a music educator for over 17 years, working with young students in a classroom setting and also teaching private lessons. I have worked with students with ADD/ADHD, Aspergers and Autism both in Special Education and in General Music as well as in my private music instruction. My B.S. is in Music Therapy, which has a heavy emphasis on Music Education. I have worked as a therapist, both privately and in group settings, with diverse special needs, including those listed above. As a music therapist, I have worked with children with special needs in school, home, and hospital settings. I am a registered Music Therapist through the Certifying Board of Music Therapy.
