Hi! I'm Shauna and I'd love to share my diverse knowledge with you:

I am a certified English tutor for The Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County specializing in working with children and adults in Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and Spelling since 2013. My training is specialized in cognitive memory responses and early education psychology. I have experience in and out of the classroom setting working with students who need additional assistance to break barriers and excel at their subject.

I also have been involved with Art for more than 15 years, and taught painting and drawing in many venues. Through my unique methods, these lessons have resulted in many satisfied students who have grown in their confidence and skills.

My teaching style puts an emphasis in developing self-confidence by balancing positive encouragement and structured guidance (goal sheets, customized learning assistance plan, learning style assessment, etc). I won't push a student past what they can handle for that period of time, but I will also challenge the student to achieve and retain as much progress as possible in each session.

From my academic life to my professional career - in my roles as Senior Staff Writer for The Beachcomber, Literacy Tutor, and the many journalistic hats I wore in my Marketing roles - I have always been well-versed in the nuances of the English language. My experience as a certified tutor and teaching thought-provoking Biblical studies for my local church I am adept in taking complex concepts and making them more digestible for learning purposes.

Handwriting skills are not to be underestimated particularly for youth. Developing good handwriting skills can help boost hand-eye coordination and a host of other benefits for your child. Among several other strategies, I use multi-sensory exercises to help tactile learners (common with those who have ADHD) prepare for handwriting for longer periods of time that may be required.

I love the doors reading can open for people of all ages, especially in the youth. Having a solid grasp of grammar, comprehension, and pondering deeper concepts to what the text is communicating is like art to me. As a certified literacy tutor, I enjoy helping students develop their best potential in a skill that will serve them richly for a lifetime... and usually they love reading as a result too!

For 4 years proofreading and checking for correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation has been a large part of my professional career in Marketing. This was to assure high quality of copy for high revenue-generating campaigns, as well as, press releases. As a fun fact, all through grade school I always placed in the top ranks of spelling bees.

To obtain my certification for the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County I received much in-depth training on vocabulary memorization that is based in cognitive learning strategies and of course, positive encouragement.

Reasoning and critical thinking skills

Shauna is absolutely the best tutor for my son. She is knowledgeable, and her teaching method is very unique. Shauna is patient and can keep his attention for the entire one-hour lesson. She provides him with positive encouragement and structured guidance, sharing tools he can later use by himself. We are very happy we met her. She deserves more than 5 stars!
