Teaching is my passion. I am a retired foreign language teacher from Rochester, NY who has taught in middle school, high school, and college, as well as adults in Adult Education. I hold permanent NY teacher certification in German, Spanish, and Russian K-12. I find teaching to be very rewarding and I miss the interaction with students. I enjoy the one on one aspect of tutoring because it enables me to tailor lessons to the specific needs of the student. The smiles on students' faces when they are successful is the best part of the job. I have a Master's degree in Liberal Studies with many graduate level courses in English and Linguistics, and many hours of literacy training, so I would also be very comfortable tutoring English, especially as a second language. I am very organized and have over 20 years in the classroom designing lessons and tutoring students who needed extra help. I like to use a variety of materials in lessons and different approaches to learning the four skill areas of language. My teaching philosophy has always been that all students are capable of learning. Teaching is my passion. I took lessons with Gilda as a program of self-study for the German language. Before we began, we discussed my goals and expectations for the tutoring sessions and set realistic, achievable goals for the study. At the first class, she had me take a diagnostic exam to determine my weakest and strongest areas. Then, for much of the class we worked through a German textbook, with robust supplementary materials supplied by Gilda for further practice. Our lessons focused on grammar, vocabulary, usage, and reading comprehension, with practice in writing as well as conversation.
As we progressed, Gilda did a great job of balancing clear and accessible explanations with more in-depth practice with the material at hand. What's more, Gilda was also extremely responsive to questions; if she did not know the answer to my question, she would always come back the next week with a well-researched response. Gilda's positive, cheerful, encouraging demeanor was also balanced nicely by her willingness to push me beyond my comfort zone and help me get the most out of my lessons. She is a natural teacher, and it is easy to see she is passionate about languages and language learning. Gilda was always punctual with our meetings and I never had a problem with rescheduling or canceling sessions.
At several points over the course of our lessons, we would also discuss my progress and whether there was anything else I wanted to focus on or see in more depth. On our mutually-agreed upon final session, Gilda gave me the same diagnostic test I had taken in the beginning so I could see my progress. My goal was go reach a solid B1 level of German (based on CEFR standards), and I am pleased to say that I passed a B1 exam from the Goethe Institut at the conclusion of our classes. The progress I made with Gilda was achievable, realistic and measurable. I would recommend her highly to anyone seeking to begin or improve their language skills.
Learning a new language will never be described as an easy task. It takes a lot of time, dedication and consistency to learn amother language properly. Gilda facilitates a very positive learning environment to help build a strong foundation for learning a new language. Her lessons are structured very well and easy to understand. I have been taking lessons for Russian with Gilda for 5 weeks now, and i have already learned so much; it has been a very you rewarding experience thus far! If you are considering learning Russian, or any other language on her list I highly recommend giving Gilda P. a shot. And always remember: Practice makes perfect!
Once again I appreciate Gilda's patience and competency. She is both clear in her explanations and in her expectations (homework) for me. I especially appreciate her pragmatic approach.
Gilda is very helpful in pointing me in the right direction in my German studies, and answers every question I have in the best way possible. Also gives good recommendations on what I can do outside of our tutoring lessons. She is a very nice teacher, and would highly recommend!
Gilda was very honest and upfront during our initial phone consultation. She met with my daughter for an hour, evaluated her skills, gave her helpful information and offered her opinion that at this point, she didn't see the need for my daughter to have a tutor. I very much appreciated her honesty and evaluation of my daughter's skill level and the helpful tips she provided her with.
Gets you working, explains the real context of what people say in different situations, but with firm overview of the language.
Very knowledgeable. Explains things clearly and is very understanding of students abilities. Always comes prepared and remembers the students strengths and weaknesses.
Very thorough, calm, patient. Also very resourceful in being able to catch my son up from deficiencies he had by taking FLVS Spanish 1 and 2 so that he can succeed in Spanish 3 in public HS this yr.
Gilda creates an excellent learning atmosphere. She works hard for our lessons and makes me also work harder to improve my English. She brings new exercises for every lesson and gives me challenging homework. Gilda has a great talent to recognize what I need to practice more and she encourages me to do my best. I feel relaxed and full of energy with her. We laugh a lot and have interesting conversations. Gilda brings me material about everyday American life as topics for our discussions. She is absolutely an excellent teacher.
Gilda is a great tutor! She has been unbelievably flexible with my hectic schedule, and is always accommodating. She moves at a pace that you are comfortable with, and has such a natural way of teaching a challenging topic. Gilda is extremely knowledgeable and willing to do whatever it takes to help you reach your goal. I highly recommend Gilda and will refer all of my friends to her.

Gilda did a great job tutoring my daughter. She was always very prepared and provided excellent detailed notes after each lesson so I could follow along and my daughter could prepare for the next lesson. I highly recommend her.
Gilda and I have been meeting once a week for a month now. I am learning Russian at a beginners level. Having never learned a foreign language before Gilda is making it very easy to understand. She is very patient and makes each lesson very enjoyable, so much so that the hour only seems to be about 5 minutes. I would strongly recommend Gilda as a tutor for any age. In addition, she is always early and well prepared for all of the lessons, she develops very good lesson plans, using books, objects, or verbal communication, Gilda does her best to make the material understandable and usable. I look forward to many more sessions with her.
I enjoyed meeting Gilda today to review what my long-term goals are for learning Russian. It is obvious that Gilda is a seasoned teacher, and I am pleased that in the near future we will begin regular tutoring sessions. My only regret is that due to my scheduling, we will have to wait til mid September to resume with regular sessions.
Both our kids, 6 and 8, enjoy going to the library to meet Ms. Gilda for their German lessons. She is so patient and sweet with them! She is always well prepared, very encouraging, and a lot of fun. The kids love her!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
