Hi, I’m Joseph (or Joey)! I’ve tutored middle and high schoolers all throughout my high school years in mathematics, competition math, and standardized testing (SAT, ACT). I’m committed to Stanford University class of 2030 and plan to study math for my career.
I’m experienced in SAT testing and have gotten a perfect 1600 on the test. I also have extensive competition math experience, and have won multiple national awards in trigonometry and calculus. Additionally, I’ve been vice president of a nonprofit tutoring organization since my Junior year.
I try to tutor with a focus on depth and adaptability, aiming to meet each student exactly where they are while steadily pushing them forward. I apply rigorous problem-solving not just to the students’ questions, but also to their underlying issues with the material itself. I emphasize patterns and connections between concepts, especially in more advanced topics, so students build the confidence and independence necessary to make future connections on their own.
I split each session into three portions, with lengths dependent on the students’ needs. I first find out what the current topics in question are, and what problems the student is having with them. Then, I cover the basics of the topic as in a lesson, using student feedback to get a better idea of what they already know and what we need to cover. Finally, I use practice problems (from past homeworks or which I make up on the spot) to solidify the student’s understanding. This is where I cover additional material and try and make relevant connections to other topics the student understands better.
