Throughout my professional life, I have taught students at many levels in many environments. Throughout my professional life, I have taught students at many levels in many environments. As the head of a research laboratory, I have not only trained advanced postdoctoral fellows, but also numerous high school interns, college students, and those seeking entrance into medical school after having finished college (e.g. those in “post-baccalaureate” programs). I have run my own lecture and laboratory university-level courses, and I have also taught as a K-12 guest teacher, including for special education students.
I started my career as a tutor in the summer after my first year in college and I haven't stopped teaching since. Even as a research professor at the St. Luke's-Roosevelt Institute for Health Sciences, an affiliate of Columbia University, I went out of my way to teach full biology lecture night courses at nearby Fordham University. Over the years, I have had many of my students become authors on papers and win major science awards. I now guide high school students on getting into good colleges, and in particular I provide them with tips about entering the medical and research professions. So I do enjoy teaching and I have been successful at it.
I have had decades of training, working, and teaching in the biomedical sciences. I have a Ph.D. in molecular genetics, as well as an M.D. I have produced transgenic animals, I have performed stem cell tissue culture experiments, and I've lectured about nutrition. I've worked with three viruses during my years in a department of virology and microbiology. My experience with viruses has been very useful in helping me to advise others during the pandemic, and I think it is currently a very useful organizing topic to teach about a lot of the biomedical sciences. I also am an expert cognitive neuroscientist, which is another great organizing perspective to learn about biology in general.
I prefer to teach subjects matter with which I have significant experience, since I believe it gives a great deal more insight and impact to the students. But even m
