My 35 years of teaching include public, private, and college level instruction. In addition, I have tutored students individually in all areas of the language arts. I have taught the reading and writing components for SAT and GED preparation. I find tutoring extremely rewarding because students can freely express their questions and misunderstandings, thereby receiving immediate feedback and experiencing personal satisfaction and self confidence.
My expertise includes the teaching of all aspects of English language arts, specifically critical reading strategies, advanced levels of vocabulary, literature, grammar, and writing skills. Shirley worked well with our daughter and related to her strengths and identified areas that needed improvement. Started with a skills assessment and broke lesson down into manageable units of work.
Mrs. Shirley has been a pleasure working with. She is professional at all times, and communicate effectively with me regarding my son progress. Also she's reliable and arrives each session ready to assist my son. Mrs. Shirley has been teaching my son how to develop acceptable work habits and study skills. Most of all, my son enjoys working with Mrs. Shirley, and we both appreciate her time.
Miss, Shirley was an excellent teacher and she really knew what she was teaching.
She's is so pleasant. I would really recommend her to anybody.
My daughter is finding Shirley to be very helpful so far and to be worth the time, effort and expense.
After the completion of the assessment, Shirley reviewed each sentence that was incorrect and correct. She immediately identified my weakness. I would highly recommend Shirley to future students and adults.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored many SAT students this year, including the Reading section, and I am very familiar with the new SAT. I can assure you that you will learn what you need for success on this test, as long as you are willing to work hard and practice.
